It needs a complete rethink on emissions

they are too fixed on the end result emission , rather than all the harm to get that emission

ie DPF CAT EGR & various eco equipment , killing engines / cars

they arn't fixing things , if the engines are failing due to the equipment

it's almost as bad as battery cars - battery's cause more harm / polution , than the petrol engine they replace

eco accountants have been given all the power , engineers have been brushed aside

I was going to buy a new car soon - but my old city bug is 10 years old now - & has been faultless (touch wood)

a new car with all the carp bolted on it won't last half as long

any bets on what euro brands will be affected - I recon all the germans & german owned brands , super cars

wonder if the japs have been honest - my guess is yes

Do we have any real UK brands that can be affected - all owned by foreign interests ?

I'd be surprised if its just VAG doing it, it tends to be a hallmark of quality even down to subbrands of seat and skoda. I reckon some others are pooping a brick.

eco accountants have been given all the power , engineers have been brushed aside

I disagree; it has just increased the requirement for skilled engineering to create an appropriate system which meets the governmental targets. In this case, they have just opted to cheat and not increase the costs associated to the R&D required, other manufacturers have shown it can be done, VW just opted not to.

This is incorrect, the R&D has already been done, equipment fitted and tested, vw have just chosen to save costs on installing it to the production vehicles!

I'm wondering if the recall for EU5 cars in UK will mean that they need to be re-certified for all emissions....

Our 2009 Tiguan looks like it will be recalled, it is 199g/km CO2, so if it was re-certified it would go into a higher VED band and hence more expensive road tax.

The more worrying thing though, is that the fix will most probably mean increased EGR use (higher soot output) which is gonna increase problems with DPF, EGR valves, coolers, intake deposits etc etc (which VW already had more than its fair share of, that's probably a contributing reason for the cheat in the first place).

Fuel economy will probably be worse too.

?? what?

Electric cars have zero tailpipe emissions

It is true that shipping the chemicals/materials around the world does cause emissions but you can't get crude oil locally either, what sort of emissions do you think an oil refinery gives off?
