Yep I live near a power station (I used to work there) 100'000'000 tons of coal on the stock piled heap burnt to power "green" electric cars :-)

it's almost as bad as battery cars - battery's cause more harm / polution , than the petrol engine they replace

?? what?

Electric cars have zero tailpipe emissions

It is true that shipping the chemicals/materials around the world does cause emissions but you can't get crude oil locally either, what sort of emissions do you think an oil refinery gives off?

Electric cars have zero tailpipe emissions  - the difference is the power station is the exhaust pipe

Yes it is, - what a cycle beater!! lol Unless you go solar, wind farm or tidal electric generation

We're getting rid of the Ibiza in January.

I might tell them they've mis-sold it to me and ask for loads of money back

To be honest this will not stop me owning or driving a VW diesel. Making a huge song and dance over something else and like everything else  in the news it will die off but still lurk in the background, much like Ebola. its still out there.

I'm sure there will be something else that will crop up shortly to take the edge of this.

Fair enough and I'd possible tend to feel the same way, but I would be constantly asking myself what other deceitful things have they done (and maybe to me if I were an owner)?

my 1900kg 2ltr TDI Passat GT 170 will achieve with ease 53 mpg.

Here's my issue.

Seat Ibiza 1.6TDi 30 quid a year to tax. Averages 45-50mpg on a run

Mazda 6 2.2TD 130 quid a year to tax averages 55-60mpg on a run.

They must make the same number of CO2s per gallon of diesel, so why is there such a difference in tax? Were VAG honest in their emissions figures?

Those sound like fairly respectable figures, however the HLE Metro, on Independent Test (by the AA) got something in the order of 83 MPG, and that was in 2000 and,,, no, 1990's,,,, no,  in 1980 and that had what sort of Diesel Engine again,,,, oh yeah, that's right, it was petrol, yeah, petrol, but it was modern by even today's offerings, yeah?  Oh yeah, now I remember, no, it was bleedin ancient!, a full cast iron lump, designed in the late 40's and first fitted to a car in the early 50's,,, and that engine was,,,,,,,,,

"Shown to the Public for the first time at the NEC Motor show in Birmingham, the Metro was available in 998cc and 1275cc versions of the A-Plus engine. Metro was initially available in a plethora of trim variations, ranging from 1.0 Basic model to the 1.3HLS model. Most attention was drawn to the High Economy 1.0HLE model, which was claimed to be the most economical car Europe in flag-waving adverts. Much play was made of the 83MPG fuel consumption figure that the AA had achieved in steady-speed tests on the HLE – read the small print and this amazing figure was achieved at a steady 30mph, not really related to real life driving."

....and the Metro HLE had a lower Cd than the other models at launch due to not being fitted with rear mudflaps. Also a higher final drive ratio. Vorsprung durch mechanical engineering.

Well the way I look at this is and I'm being selfish here that it will not have an impact on my day to day running of my current car.

Compared to the crap that came out of my old B5.5 Passat TDI my exhaust visible emissions on my CC are non existent. Yes it's the ones you cannot see that I understand and fully take on board but from an emissions point of view a modern car is far better.

The thing is we are surrounded by motorised vehicles whether it's on the ground, in the air, on the sea. Now for two of them ( ground and air) there have been major leaps in the decrease in the noxious gases emitted by these types of vehicle. Major legislation and so on to decrease emissions has played a major part along with technology but we as the paying public use these modes of transport everyday. Now the same can be said for marine vessels I'm sure but the point here is unless a cheap means of transport powered by a totally clean and cheap power supply is made available to everyone on the planet then we will be stuck using these modes of transport.

So unless we just stop using these vehicles completely which will never happen we the user will keep driving, flying, sailing etc. Emissions will keep happening at an increasing rate as our populations increase, vehicle manufacturers will keep doing what they need to do to sell cars etc, we will keep buying them and it's just a viscous circle.

Anyway enough of this, no matter what happens we will still keep driving to provide for our families etc. All of the big boys will get outed over time and more dirt will be dug up. This seems to be the nature of the beast.

I know this isn't a debate on emissions, the environment etc, however, while I was once a 'believer' in low emissions and all that goes with it, more or less, there is some BS about it all, not completely, but partly for sure. As for some emissions getting in to the environment, and 'reducing' them, well, one way to look at it is the bucket is filling up no matter what, maybe a bit slower, but that's all. Many emissions don't 'disappear' over time, so it's only delaying the inevitable.

In any case, whether we like it or not, it's only releasing back in to the air component of the environment, what was once in the air and has been proven to be part of a cycle, we have just intervened considerably early in the cycle and sped that part up.

VAG have been caught out cheating on compliance. Will it really have any impact on the environment?  No.

Others I have seen in our local News are now also coming under the Microscope.

and back in 1976 also with the good old A-Series engine.........

The 100 mpg Carb.
By David Vizard
"First off let me give you what I believe qualifies me to address this subject. In 1975 I was the lead engineer on an economy project. The subject was a 1275 Mini GT. That’s a direct relative of the original 1275 Mini Cooper."

"The goal was to see if we could get this car to do 50 mpg at 50 mph. Once that had been achieved it would be taken on a 3 month round USA drive at normal highway speeds (not fuel economy test speeds which would take forever to go anywhere) and see if we could get 50 mpg.. An independent test at MIRA (Motor Industry Research Association) on a truly lousy wet and windy winter day recorded 55 mpg at 50 mph and 99 mpg at 30 mph. OK that 99 mpg is real close to 100 but do we all want to drive at no more than 30mph – no! Not only that but that 99 mpg was achieved with a 1600 lb car. The same size car today weighs in at over 2100 lbs and the average mid sized sedan at 2800 lbs plus."

"I am not sure my team was the first to break the 50 mpg at 50 mph but we did it before Honda and all for less than $100,000 in today’s money. We failed to see that 50 mpg with our round USA trip but did record a close 49.88 mpg. But in all fairness this figure included full throttle road test by Road & Track plus 300 miles of snow drift bashing in 2nd and 3rd gear as we drove through one of the worst winter storms in Wyoming. Added to that the car saw a hurricane in the New Orleans area which we had to out run. But that’s not the end. The car had 'run flat' tires which were magazine tested by driving at 50 mph for about 50 miles plus it was also driven off road. How many economy drives include such? Answer - about none!"

"In addition to the fuel saving we added over 10 mph to the top speed and cut the 0-60 time by 1.5 seconds so we really did address Performance, Economy and Green (PEG) issues successfully."

I can confirm this is not restricted to the 2.0 only as was first suggested. My Caddy is a 1.6.
