They are just grub screws of what ever size the engine builder used.

Sorry no idea what I used in mine as it was such a long time ago. But Allen key size will give a clue.

M14 x 1.5

As far as I remember I didn't need to drill them out any further.

Get a bottom tap to suit (ebay) and make sure they get tapped square, I used a thick block of wood with a hole the same OD as the tap to keep it at 90 degrees.

I tapped mine in M14 fine then cut down M14 fine set screws and cut a slot with a hacksaw in the end. Will seal them in with a suitable sealent. We did it this way because it's what we could lay our hands on at the time in the machine shop! If I'd been more patient then I'd probably sought out some UNF grub screws.

Oh it is also recommended to use a taper threaded grub screw.

But as you can see it really does depend on what is in there.

For the Main Oil Galleries, that's the size I use. If you were hell bent on going Imperial, you can spend a few days chasing up 9/16" UNC ones, but they were odd even in the day, but do exist.

The plugs I use are a Cup Point design so that they actually seal on the taper of the Cup.I also use a medium grade loctite as insurance against leakage. To be sure that they will seal on the taper, I start tapping them in the drill press, but just turn the chuck by hand, once one thread is cut, you're away.

Caution: When tapping the block, be very careful that you don't end up going too deep, as the drillings that feed Main Bearings 1 and 3 are right THERE too, almost at the base of the drilling for the plug, it's easy to partly block these drillings.

If you are going to also pull the plugs in the block for the Oil Relief Valve and also the one in the Head, I think I use 1/4" or 5/16" UNC (as I sit here now, I can't recall!!).

Tip: when ordering, ask for Socket Head or In Hex Screws  ;D
