Also you will need a split washer on there. As often the nut will bottom out on the thread before it is tight.
So nut off. Arm down. Clean the threads. Check nut goes on cleanly. When it dies. Re fit arm. Washer and nut. Then apply pressure to the arm to grip th taper. Tighten the nut.

With the weight on on suspension you should be able to turn the nut some rounds with your fingers. If that fails than the thread or nut is unusable anylonger and should be replaced.

Don't cross thread the nut for a start would be a good beginning!

So, I cleaned the thread and the nut has manged to slide in more but as nicklouse said the thread is gone. :/
I only need it to hold on for a couple of blocks on the back of a tow truck to take it to my other garage where I will be stripping it down for sandblasting. Think it should hold, right?

But I would add a few washers so that you can actually get the tapers to lock when the nut is tightened as far as you can.

If you are not driving it you will be fine.
