Hi everyone,

I'm looking to get my clubman estate project back to original condition and need some help with the engine. It's registered as a 1098 but currently has a 1275 SPI engine (that needs a rebuild). The identification listings show 10AMW/Ta as the correct engine number start but I've also seen estates stamped with 10H791... Have these been replaced? The owners believed they were original.

Aside from the block stamp, what should I be looking for in terms of originality with head, crank, etc.? And/or where's the best source of information for this, I've been googling like mad but not coming up with many specifics.

They'll be some photos when I stuck in.

Thanks!

Ed

What age is the clubman? if it's 70's then 10H791P** is likely to be the correct engine number. should have a 202 head

10AMW/Ta is from an early Austin or Morris 1100 and is fitted with standard Gear Ratios and a Remote type Shifter. There was a Twin Carb version of these and the later types in that range were fitted with a 12G295 Head. Be fairly rare though.

Sorry for the delay, didn't get a notification, need to change some settings I think!

It's a 1980 clubman estate.

So you don't think a 10AMW/Ta was ever in a clubman estate?

I have the serial number of the engine from a vehicle check service, but it seems to only be in the unique part.

Much appreciated.

Off hand, it was somewhere around 1970 they changed the engine prefix system. From that time on, the engines were generally 99H, 10H or 12H, if yours, had an 1100 from the factory, being a 1980 build, it would have been prefixed 10H

Ok, so that does add further weight to it needing a 10H791P (it's an 1100 on my V5). They certianly seem easier to get hold as well. Thanks gents

Is the P at the end significant?

P = "Carburetter crankcase ventilation and clean air pack" (complete with spelling error).

What would AA stand for (sorry for the endless questions!)?

AA = "Carburetter crankcase ventilation and air temperature control"

If there's any others you need, instead of drip feeding them. list them all ;D

Yes sorry! An AA came up on ebay and just want to see how suitable it was. Is there anywhere where this info is listed (to stop my endless questions)? Do you know what kind of mini that would have come from? If I'm going to the effort of changing the engine back I might as well get as close to original as possible...

on the Guessworks web pages

but all those bits are to do with the bits that bolt on so are kinda superfluous as you are only looking at the base engine and box. EG did the "engine" come with all the bits for an AA spec?

engine number plates can be made to order for what you want.

Bhahaha,,, sure. There's a small bit of it on the Guessworks Website, but other than that, I'm not aware of any on-line website where you'll find it all. I have some, well, maybe a little more than that, but some is printed and some is on fiche, and it's a mix of UK and Aust stuff as well.

To find what build engine spec your Estate would have had, is the Engine No. listed somewhere, like an original sales receipt or Heritage records, warranty claim, service receipt or ??????

I have a bucket load of old Microfiche and to be frank, there is no direct connection between engine number and chassis number or commission number other than what Heritage may have, and even then, I don't think they can match an engine number to a chassis...

So, if your vehicle was produced after 1973, it will have a 10H791P engine as pretty much every engine during the 70's and early 80's prior to the A+ engine being introduced was a 791P suffix, be it an 850,998,1098 if it was in a mini.
