Hey all,

I have an Austin Mini Thirty 1989, 998cc, it's recently been put back on the roads for a couple of months after a top engine re-build around 6 years ago, it had sat for 6 years. I was travelling on a motorway and to change road at a roundabout, I dropped down a gear to accelerate up a slip road from 4th to 3rd and the gear slightly grinded going in, started to make a tapping noise so I slowed down but had just entered onto the m25 so couldn't slow too much as there were lots of lorries. Then it started steaming and cut out, as I stopped it emptied loads of water from the radiator. I'm hoping it's only a pipe but that doesn't explain the strange noise?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated, thanks!

could have been a water pump failure? Have you checked the engine for obvious things like damaged hoses belts wires ect?

Although you have accounted for all that seemed to have happened, there is not quite sufficient information yet to even begin to guess what might be wrong. It would not be helpful to you to speculate and be very wrong.

Once you get it home, fill up with coolant, run the engine, and report anything unusual, we may be better placed to assist. For instance, does it still tap, and what sort of tapping is it? Pinking, for example, or maybe a CV joint knock? Does it eject water? Visible signs of leakage? Combustion products in the coolant? Running rough? Mechanical noises? Where?

A tapping noise can be many things, and many other things can cause overheating.
