Can I suggest removing the Banjo Bolt on the Oil Pipe (you know, the one where we prime the Pump from) and filling that with Oil. Crank it over once or twice, it may make a mess (and that would actually be good) or just blow a bubble or two. If it does this, then all is likely good though there maybe an air leak on the suction side.

If it does not and if it's all dry at this point, I'd say the engine will have to come out again.

I'd suspect the Gasket between the Pump and the Block and / or possibly the wrong bolts holding the Pump in place.

Yep too long bolts for the pump seems to be a common issue nowadays.

Would too long bolts stop the pump from sealing properly and mean it wouldn't pump?

Yes and why I suggest the first check first so when the engine does come out, we know where to look, though everything else should be checked too.

Could it be loose plate at back of the gearbox pick up?

Or missing gasket from either side (between plate and casing / between casing and pick up pipe)?

Wouldn't have thought so as John built the gearbox for me.

99% of the time, I just remove the Banjo Bolt on the front of the Block for the Oil Feed Pipe and fill that with Oil, I find an Oil Can handy for this. I do this usually while the engine is on the stand and that gives it enough time to run in to the Pump before getting about to running it.

<Edit: in your case, it maybe helpful to fill like this ^ then select say 3rd gear and roll the car backwards to turn the engine over in reverse couple of times to get the Oil right through the Pump, top up the drilling in the block again, then refit the Banjo Bolt and don't forget to take it out of gear! >

It's not so much that the Pump actually needs priming per se, as it is a Positive Displacement Pump, so will suck Oil up when the Inlet pipe is dry, but as the Pump has no internal seals it needs 'wetting' with Oil to seal internally. Once it's sealed internally, it will suck.

No disrespect to John (or anyone for that matter) but it won't hurt to check, We're all only human (well, most of us :D ) and can make mistakes.

Thanks, that could be where I have gone wrong. I assumed just filling the pump prior to fitting it to the block is all I needed to do. I haven't poured oil in the banjo hole. I pray that's what's needed.

to be honest that should be enough.

But is not what is generally understood as priming on here. See Mr Spiders comment on how to.

I wonder. Your oilpump is a year Old, could it Be one of those faulty ones?

It had something to do with the gasket support on the pump and the pump losing its prime that way. There was a Long thread on the turbominis Forum about it
