While I had the wheels off for the tyre change I noticed that the steering rack gaiter was showing some wear/cracks, looking back a new rack was fitted in January 2020, so the gaiters have lasted 5 years, got to say changing the drivers side was frustrating and difficult whereas the passenger side only took 10 minutes from start to finish.

Even though when replacing the steering rack gaiters I refitted the track rod ends in the same place, I thought I would check the tracking using a purchase from e bay, all checked out ok

Decided to fit an additional steady bar to the radiator side of the engine, luckily there was already a hole in the subframe so no drilling required, I also changed all the other steady bushes. I then took it for a little run and parked a few cars away from this beauty.

On the return home after a 700 mile journey attending the Cornish Riviera run the mini developed a minor exhaust blow, when I got it home I identified the blow from the Y Piece where it goes into a single pipe, I thought I would check for tightness when this happened.

I then removed the complete exhaust and refitted it with new clamps.

Also I was pleasantly suprised that I managed to achieve 45 MPG on the way home :D

My Mini was fitted with a Quick release rod change gear selector coupling when I purchased it, I have been struggling with selecting 3rd gear for a while, so today I changed it back to the standard sleeve and roll pins, the difference is amazing I can now select all gears much easier, feeling very pleased with myself.

Just a quick question, how close is your Y piece to the tunnel/ floor, mine is very close and wondering best way to tackle this .

Thanks

one way to tackle it is through adjustable engine steadies; depending on clearance between the carb and bulkhead, tipping the engine backward will move the y-piece away from the bodywork.

The Y piece has about 25 to 30mm clearance, but I do have adjustable engine steadies so could alter the clearance should it be required.

How do you find these tracking gauges? Worth a pop?

I think for £30 they are worth the money, lots of garages will check the tracking for free if you're having tyres fitted, but will charge £35 upwards for for any adjustments.

They're obviously not as good as laser tracking but are ideal especially if you are rebuilding your steering/suspension.

I would add that it is more accurate and easier to use with an additional pair of hands.

The Mini had a good run out to Beaulieu where I purchased a new steering wheel and front mats, I then went on to the Isle of Wight for a week, while there I popped in to see Ben to arrange for some work to be done later on in the year, the car has however developed a creak from the front suspension (front knuckle joints ?) and an exhaust blow as a result of going over a very high speed hump.
