Right, just measured my end float and it is 0.00944" which is out by max 0.00744" to min 0.00644", based on 0.002" to 0.003" end float tolerance. So I will order a pair of 0.003" thrust washers which will give me a total of 0.006" which should bring the tolerance back into the acceptable range.

Also I can't measure the main bearing running clearances yet as my plastigauge hasn't arrived yet, but it looks hopeful as I gave it a little wiggle and couldn't feel any major movement unlike the previous crank did!

Hope everyone agrees with me! Or is there a better solution?  :proud:

It's worth tracing down some imperial feeler gauges ... none of that EU stuff here ...

When we Brexit, do you thing the BBC will start talking in miles, yards, feet and inches again ?

Just measured the end float with the feeler gauge and can confirm that the end float is 0.009" as 0.010" doesn't fit. But I think I will base my readings from the DTi as most people recommended using that.

I should bloody hope so! As my aeronatical engineering studies are all based in imperial!

It looks like the help you got on here helped a bit. That's what we're here for, to help keep these lovely old classic cars going.

hmm, I can't seem to source anyone that could provide 0.003" thrust washers. I could source 0.005" but that would mean that I would have to get them machined down to the correct size, Or unless any of you guys would know anyone that could sell me 0.003" thrust washers?

But my end float would still be 0.001 more than it should be, or is this okay?

It'd be 4 thou.

Is it not meant to be between 3 and 6?

And I've asked this before but, you are measuring with new standard thrusts aren't you?

I am surprised as +0.003" is the standard first oversize.

You should try FW Thorntons of Shrewsbury as they will almost certainly have them and can send them to arrive within a day or so.

I always feel the ideal end float for a new engine is 0.003", but 0.002" to 0.005" is OK.

If thats the case then fantastic! converting haynes manual end float got me to between 2 - 3 thou tolerance.

and yes I am measuring with brand new std thrust washers

Could you provide a link please. As mentioned earlier I could find 0.005" not 0.003".

You are an absolute lifesaver! Don't know how you managed to find it so quickly! I spent the last 2 hours looking for them! Makes me look like a right knob!
