Hi Guys

My 1969 Mini Traveller has been sat in the garage for about 20 years and want to do a few checks to she what condition she's in.

Thought I'd start by checking the engine to see if it's seized.

I've had a quick search on here and Google, but can't find how to turn the engine over by hand.

There is a little bit in the Haynes manual about taking the spark plugs out and disable the ignition system by disconnecting the ignition coil HT lead from the distributor cap and earthing it on the cylinder block, but nothing on how you actually do it.

Anybody got a step by step guide with photos? New to all this.

Thanking you in advance for your help.

Spencer

Take the plugs out, put it in fourth, jack one front wheel up and turn the dangling wheel. That should do the trick. Might be advisable to out a few squirts of oil down the bores first.

I normally just put a socket on the crank end bolt underneath the radiator

Take off the starter, remove plugs and put some oil down the bores. Leave it to soak in and then turn the engine with a screwdriver on the ring gear.

Pankys solution is the best for me. Turns the engine very slowly indeed so requires little effort. As said oil or diesel in the bores first though

When trying to turn over an engine which has been standing for a long time I remove the plugs and pour some diesel oil down each bore. After leaving it for a few hours I put the car in 3rd gear and rock it backwards and forwards until the pistons move freely in the bores.
