with the car the other way around now i had a feel and check of the roof, and found more dents in it, so i put it in high build primer and started on the box

had a moment of erm well. i thought for a minute i had the wrong gasket set

once i realised there was another gasket on the floor i had dropped, i  was in a happy place again.

Great Work! Are you sure your diff requires gaskets? Some used them some just have sealant between the 2 faces.

so not done any more to the engine yet. Ive been trying again to get it painted. So here is some pics

IMG_20210424_151742421.jpg

IMG_20210424_151806010.jpg

i did the roof and the rear of the car. Now the roof, i dont know what it is but there was a mark under the paint. the rear of the car also got a run and where i had put primer on it, it reacted. I now know you need to leave it 24h;s before paiting it.

IMG_20210425_160143482.jpg

IMG_20210425_160201585.jpg

I had a go at polishing the roof, and went threw. Its bothering me that im painting it over and over and not getting anywhere. I asked a lad at work about how to sort it. He told me to bring my guns in and he would check them out and rebuild or do what ever as he recons the finish isnt right also if i need to polish it so much. So took them in and he said the devilbiss GTI i have is scrap as there is a cross thread on part of it, also the air cap is the wrong one etc. THe other guns i have are ebay £30, he said just bin those lol. So i was signed up for £50 a month for £225 on a new gun!

What ive done today is prep 2 parts of the car, so ill have one ready to paint and one im prepping, so any primer or what ever is at least a day old. I prepped the rear mostly yesterday, just scotched it today, and same with the side. I then painted it.

IMG_20210503_140138569.jpg

i hadnt set the gun up properly at first, but when used to it, its like night and day over the old ones. It does need a slight polish as there is bits in it, but its a lot nicer finish. Hopefully this is the final paint of the rear anyway lol.

im off this week so hopefully paint the side tomorrow.

did more today, i had noticed a little mark on the rear above the screen, its where i hadnt flatted back properly, but to be fair, i think ill leave it as a signature , its shiny and i dont think you will notice it outside. Plus also, there is a high chance i could damage the car before its finished, so have to repaint part of it anyway.

Did the roof today

IMG_20210504_135256587.jpg

IMG_20210504_135438101.jpg

i put more and more thinners in it as i went on, and the paint straight after being painted was good, but hours later it looks like its flowed even more together and is almost completely flat. i wish i had bought that gun ages ago, but i have said all along, i was to learn how to paint, and i think ive finally got it now, from the prep to the spraying. ALso knowing how things can go wrong lol...

hopefully more tomorrow.

think its the gti pro lite, I got it threw work, im properly happy with it. Its heavier than the other guns, and defiantly really well made. Terry at work the head painter, he said that gun will last me my life time ! Im going to make sure its spotless after evertime i use it. Im made up with it, wish i had bought it a long time ago!

today did more of the paint, i noticed the roof on the drivers side, there wa s abit i had missed!!!! So i tried to do a blow in and sprayed the edge of it with spray out thinners. I dont know if this will polish in but if it dosnt, its not the end of the world, one quick coat over it all will sort that.

i put even more thinners in this time, and it seems to have flowed better again!

when i did the roof i had a feeling, even though it looked mint, i had a feeling id be painting it again!

It was the first thing i painted with the new gun and i put a very light coat on then another coat, but when i checked how much paint i had actually put on, it was a lot. I then adjusted the amount of spray, and put some light coats on. Now, i hadnt put much on the sides of the roof hence why i had polished threw on one side. So i had done the same on the other side too. I spoke to someone at a paint shop and they said that also using a white primer would help.

So what i did was get soem white primer and go around the edge of the roof, and it instantly reacted! The new paint needs time to go off, and the primer just melted it. So i have left the car now for a few weeks, ill prep it all again, and then paint it bit by bit with it all prepped. Not bit by bit.

You are probably thinking that im messing this up so much, but il learning, and i hope you learn something too from this.

IMG_20210507_162213671.jpg

Now a long time ago i had started to prep the doors and boot, comming back to them this time, i can see instantly that they arnt right. Now like i keep saying, im learning, and what i can see now, over what i saw before, is totally different.

IMG_20210507_162153348.jpg

IMG_20210507_162157298.jpg

IMG_20210507_162202699.jpg

One other thing was i ve put the 998 more together now, so the clutch is on and other bits too. I decided the garage is too small to do the engine and the panels at the same time, so ive put the engine away.

IMG_20210507_132714803.jpg

Ive covered it, and looking what i thought would still be a clean 1293 make me think!

IMG_20210507_133322688.jpg

Both in wrapping now and will be all safe.

So, ive been trying to paint this car for over a year now, i feel i can see the light at the end of the tunnel, the new gun is amazing, just need to learn it, the filler i can see how of how to fix it, and the parts i have done, the side and rear the paint has flatted down nicely, and will look good.

One thing though, why dont i put that 1293 back in it ?! LOL!

bit of a warning to this one, seriously, DO NOT read on ...

well, had a look at the doors, didnt like the repairs on this one, so stripped it, started to play with it, and decided it would be best for another new skin!

IMG_20210515_154718869_BURST000_COVER.jp

IMG_20210521_171001289.jpg

IMG_20210521_171006331.jpg

so why the warning?

well, there is a bit of a situation, this is regarding the paint. I had always used 2k primer on the car, and recently, one guy at work said about using aerosol primer high build.

Anyway,

Look away, this is painfull

IMG_20210522_171014110.jpg

youtube vid of this

its getting stripped again. Were i have repaired in places i wasnt happy with, id have to flat the edges of the roof in and the paint, i must have painted it like 4 times now so its quite thick. I dont know here is 2k primer and where is not. On the back of the car, where i had done a fair bit of priming in aerosol, the paint just ripped off in sheets. The 2k reacts with the primer, and softens in, then it never dries inside.

So yes, one day... just one day i may post pics of this car painted. Probably another year or so!

I was chatting with a very good mate last night on the net, and he made this comment about the roof...

"that`s something the budha monks should take as example"
