How does this operate?

There’s a hole in the bottom that has a pipe connecting it to a shroud around the exhaust manifold.

When the engine is cold the flap you can see inside the housing lifts up blocking the cold air hole and forces the engine to pull hot air from around the exhaust manifold to assist with cold running.

As the bimetallic strip on the flap heats up the flap drops opening the hole in the top to let the engine pull in colder air.
