Hi people

I have a 77 roundnose that was originally a 998.  A previous owner has dropped a 1275cc engine in it when the 998 expired, but could not tell me what it was originally out of, so I am not certain what it was originally set up for.

The engine seems to have a lot of poke, but it has a couple of tuning issues I would like to address (timing for one, carb for another), so I figured finding out WHAT it was would be a good start, as I am aware that some engines have different timing to other 1275s.

The engine number starts 12H702E and I have read on the Mini Mania forums that the 'E' indicates she was a factory rebuild, but I cannot find reference to the 702 suffix.  The closest appears to be a 706 suffix that went in the ADO16 1300GT (found on yet another forum), but that means absolutely nothing really.

Any ideas on how I can identify this beasty further would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks.

Yes - that is where I saw that 706 was the closest engine type (model #) to the one I have.  Guessworks has no listing for the 702.

The problem with the E is that it rarely (if at all) was used with the standard engine numbering.

pictures of the engine can help as there are visible differences between the configurations of different cars.

I have 706 as 1275 GT not ADO16

My apologies - yes, it is.  I had been previously looking at engine numbers on my old Moggy 1300GT from many years ago to see if there was anything similar and then when I looked at the 706 reference, had a brain fart and confused the Austin / Morris 1300GT and the Mini 1275GT.  Apologies if it was misleading or confusing.

I can certainly take photos of the engine.  Was there any part(s) of it in particular you wished to see?  Off the top of my head, she's got a crankcase vent from the bellhousing (which to my mind puts it as an earlier model) that is currently plumbed to the carb, a timing hole in the bellhousing, a mechanical fuel pump, no oil bypass warning light on the oil filter housing and she takes a spin-on filter.  I have not checked to see whether she has removable covers on the exhaust side of the block yet or eyeballed any of the numbers on the that side of the block either.  I also need to look on the timing cover and see if there are any timing marks or maybe a trident-shaped piece of metal sticking down to make timing the car easier.....or if I have to use the light-and-mirror effort through the hole in the bellhousing.  Any of that stuff any good to you and what would you like to see?

How it was acquired may have a bearing. If it came from a dealership as a replacement for your car it'd be sat on the original gearbox etc, but if it's been liberated from a scrapper it could be a mix of either.

Expect you'd have to whip the head off to be sure.

I feel here, probably finding out what it was from, may have little relevance to what it is now. At some point in time, it may have been modified.

I'd suggest at the very least, taking a plug out, winding over the engine to get a piston near TDC and see what you can of the piston Crown shape. I'd also remove the Inlet Manifold to check the Ports and compare them to a stock head. I'd also likely measure the Cam Timing (which can be done in car) to get a better feel for what it is now, then that may help guide you with how to best tune it.

12H702E is originally from an ADO16 1300 type i.e. the bog standard Austin or Morris 1300.

Contrary to what was written above, the 'E' was used on numerous engines and indicates carburettor crankcase ventilation - the crankcase breather was connected directly to the carburettor. There would be no Smiths PCV unit which was mainly used on some earlier twin carb engines.
