Hello.

I have just replaced the head gasket on a 1275 Metro engine and when refilling with oil the rocker cover is filling up and it is taking about half an hour for it to drain down.

It has helped to turn the engine over by hand but is still draining very slowly. Also, it was very cold last night so the oil was very thick.

Is this normal?

The car has been off the road for nearly 5 years but prior to that I had replaced the oil several times before and don’t remember this being an issue.

Thanks.

1275's can be pretty slow to fill with oil especially if you have cold 20/50 and a cold engine.
Only way to the sump is via 8 push rod holes which are already partially blocked with a push rod and then 2 holes circled to allow it to flow into the sump

The oil is slow to go down om a Metro engine, why ?

As well when you start it up, disconnect something so it does not start straight away - prime the oil galleries.

It may also clatter a bit, but does clear

One of the reasons why 20w50 is far from ideal in an engine in winter.

Patience is key, it will take a while. Also when you come to starting the engine make sure it is out of gear and the clutch pedal up Before you crank the motor.

keep the oil indoors to warm up before putting it in the engine - it'll flow a lot better when warmed.

the air has to go somewhere as the oil drips down the tiny holes..air bubbling up through the oil to escape really slows things down

Still have the breathers which connect through the outside air through the carb and air filter when the engine is turned off.

Did my first mini oil change a few weeks ago, 1275 lump. Exact same issue filling 20w50. Oil was kept in heated room but was surprised how long it took to drain. So next time will try dipstick out and just be patient.
by the way, from videos ive seen on line of these oil changes, they never mention to prefill the oil filter prior to fitting to engine. This helps to get oil where it needs to go faster on initial start up, oil light goes out sooner.

Filling the oil filter is beneficial but on some cars (mini MPI as an example) has the filter horizontal so the oil would just leak out making a mess

I always pre fill the oil filter and oil cooler.
Pulling the dipstick out doesn't make any noticeable difference to the speed of oil filling.

If you don't prime the oil filter, or can't because the filter fits horizontally, take an ignition lead off and spin the engine over until the oil pressure warning light goes out. Whilst doing this do not push down on the clutch pedal.
