I’ve had great success with Crack-it spray on bolts that won’t budge...

I’ve had success with Plus Gas. Usually. But not here.

If you are considering removing the engine to make life easier but lack a crane or equipment to do so, how about unbolting the front subframe and then get a couple of helpers to lift the front of the shell up and over the engine and wheelbarrow it back and rest it down.

If you rest the front down low with the front wheels off before you start you don't actually have to lift it all that high to get clearance.

It would give you much better access to carry out the repairs you need and it sounds like you are most of the way stripping wise anyway.

Just a thought...

Ben

I’ve been wondering about that. Is there a link to that approach anywhere on this forum? I was planning on changing subframe mounts at some point, so this would presumably give me access to all sorts of things.

Here

https://www.theminif...front-subframe/

I did it once many years ago.  As far as I recall it was quite straightforward.  The engine and subframe were easy to move about on the wheels.

I did it here

https://www.theminif...rage-iow/page-2

There are some details in my write up that may help.

Lots of people in the link posted in the previous reply saying it is a pain to do but when I did the one in my link, 2 of us lifted it up (one at each front wheel arch) and up and over we went first go.

Just make sure the car is in the deck with no front wheels before you start lifting but take precautions to protect the car and components from becoming damaged.

I'm going to try drilling a small (as small as I can get away with) access hole in the subframe that lines up with the PITA wok bolt

I've bought some of the freeze / crack-it spray too

I already have a "b*ggered-nut removal" socket set

Sounds easy

Ha!

I'd previously done something similar to create an access hole in the inner wing to get to the 3 way brake pipe connecting banjo on the driver's side when I fitted new Goodridge flexi hoses

The passenger side inner wing already had a perfect access hole

I am already half accepting that I'll have to whip the engine up and out or the subframe (& engine) out and under at some point, but because of my "fix things on the drive" limitations, I'm hoping to delay it

The links above to guides and descriptions for either up and out or down and under are VERY helpful.

Informative

Thank you

First, spray with Plusgas.

Then get a socket on it as above. Use next size down socket, extension bar fitted to socket and whack it with a lump hammer to jam it on tight. No way do you need to remove the engine

Making a small hole in the front subframe to get access to do that

Started last night

I managed to get the first pilot hole almost spot on, lined up

Good luck more than anything

Today's task is to made that pilot hole bigger, somehow

Just big enough to get the socket through and onto the bolt head
