Hi guys, while I was out driving the car today, I noticed a fast clicking type noise when driving. It is most noticeable in 1st and 2nd but is still there in 3rd and 4th. It only happens when im accelerating, as soon as i lift off it stops.

 

Has anyone got any idea what this could be? I've convinced myself that the diff is knackered and that the engine needs to come out!  

 

I don't think its the cv joints as it happens when driving in a straight line and the clicking sounds faster than other bad cv joints I've heard. Could it be wheel bearings? I have just had the brake discs replaced about a month ago but it started making the noise today...

 

Any help is appreciated before I pull the engine again!

Is the sound 'in time' with road speed or engine revs ?

Road speed for sure, pretty sure it's nothing to do with the engine. I had a look at the wheel bearings today and the nearside does have some play in it and seeing as the front hubs were apart recently I'm hoping its just this or the spines going into the drive flange perhaps?

With play in the bearings, it's certainly very possible the Drive Flange (and all the bits hanging off that) will be moving, and there could be one of the Wheel Stud Heads that's poking out just that bit further, remember, when accelerating, is is the drive flanges that's pulling the car forward, and so they do move back and forth from the go pedal to the stop. Maybe start looking there.
