i used to own a 1.3 rallye black one, well 2 one hit a wall  not cars..although there getting rare and getting good condition ones is hard.

why not get a s2 rallye, 1.6 8v more torq and you dont have to rev it as high as you will do the 1.3......trust me it wants to be rev'd

plus for 4k you could probably find a decent s2 for that if not a s1 one with a 16v in it.

try www.106rallye.co.uk there ok there, although dont look in teh problems page might put you off going french :w00t:

Get a 3 series or the Merc equivalent, comfy & built to last.....low end models should not cost a fortune on the insurance either.

Ooooh, thats the best idea so far! Plus, they practically pay for themselves with the drug dealings you'll get with the car!

I've got a manky old Rover 200 and that does the job fine, especially as its got a Honda engine. If it ever breaks down, i'll eat my straw hat...
Otherwise 106 Rallye gets my vote.

Ive been thinking about it alot (when i proberly should have been doing work) and i have narowed it down to these cars:

Peugeot 205 1.4 GT. GP 6
Peugeot 106 1.3 Rallye. GP 9
MG ZR 1.4. GP 7
Mitsubishi Colt 1.6. GP 6

I am not going to get a 16v mini because it still doesnt have alot of boot space, and i dont think i could afford one.

Jammy, you keep on puting ideas into my head!!!

The 205 is VERY cool and fun to drive, but they are old and tired, it is hard to find a good one.

The 106 is one of my favarout cars but its high insurance, ragged and hard to find one.

The MG seems good because its fairly quick, quite new and looks nice, but they have poo gear boxes on them.

The colt is original and farily quick, but it is for old people.

I keep on thinking about it and see waht quotes i get.

If I ever need anything faster I go for the wifes renault megane convertable, but the boot space is about the same and you can not get tall people in the back.

would have to go for the ZR but beware of the lack of spare parts, some of the body kit bits are in short supply.

if its just for towing then non of them...

go for something like an escort or mondeo estate - space for tools and kit in the back and enough grunt to easily tow a mini on a trailer and cheap enough to buy 2nd hand, tax, insure and fuel.

be practical if moneys an issue, just because you mite have 4k to spend, doesnt mean that you have to spend it all......

If your going for a 205, go for an XS. Its the same as the GT, just with 3 doors instead of 5 like the GT.

I've got one as a daily car, and think its excellent. Reliable, good on fuel, cheap to tax and insure, and is fairly nippy (85 bhp as standard).. and I think its fun to drive..

for what it's worth, and this is just my opinion, but i have never been impressed with the design and quality of any Peugeot.
i'm talking technical not looks wise.
i do a bit of work on my sisters from time to time and all i can say is i'm glad it's not my car.

can't comment on the others on your final line up, but i always thought VW's were made well.

Skoda all the way.

Whoever said get a VRS....don't bother. If you can't afford the insurance on a scooby then the VRS isn't going to be far behind.

I paid £350 for my M reg Skoda Favorit with 37k on the clock. It's a 1.3 and goes really well. It's just done a 1000 mile round trip to Mull and back without a hiccup.

They're a lot of car for the money and I've had no problems at all with mine and I get about 40ish miles to the gallon depending on what sort of driving I'm doing.

205s are old, and hard to find a good one, 106s aren't much newer in design terms, and compared to the impreza will feel small. MGs are amongst one of the worst cars in the world, and there are parts issues, plus they lose money rapidly. the colt is a bit of an oddball choice, but japanese will outlast the others by far. my fdriend has got a k reg toyota carina, done 180k miles and still spot on all round. why not consider ford/vauxhall/or aomething german, like bmw, audi etc. i picked up an old audi 100, 2.2 litre, with only 77k on the clock, mot'd too, for only 250quid! diesel mondeos and escorts are becoming cheap, as are astras. hopefully these are a few ideas for you.

I like the sieras xr4by4's, that is quite a good car and it would be handy because of the big boot and 5 doors.
