Hi everyone,
I’ve had a search and can’t find an answer to my question. Forgive me if it’s amateur.
I’m rebuilding a 1275 engine on a car that previously had an 1100 in it along with all the wiring. My previous distributor had red and black wires that came out of it that wired through the ignition coil.
The new distributor I’ve purchased just has a single green wire (I assume this connects to the thermostat) on it and no way to wire it through to the ignition coil without the ignition lead. Do I need to somehow wire the distributor to the ignition coil?
It’s a 65D points type distributor and I believe it’s a non ballast type ignition coil.
Also does the thermostat wire on the distributor need to be connected? I’m struggling to see why this would be a requirement.
Thanks in advance! Hopefully that’s enough info to go on. I’ve searched far and wide online but all the wiring diagrams are for the distributors with red and black cables out of them.

A 65D is the Lucas dizzy designed from the ground up as electronic. It doesn't sound like you have one of those. If you do, the cap will be held on with screws and there be a "black box" amplifier attached to the side.

 

All distributors work by grounding the ignition coil -ve terminal & momentarily breaking that earth connection, which causes the coil to generate a spark. If there's only one wire, it will connect to the  coil -ve.

 

Ballasted ignition requires a ballasted supply (for normal use) & a bypass supply (for when the starter motor is running). Both connect to the coil's +ve terminal.

 

Assuming you're referring to something else as the thermostat.

Here’s the wire mentioned coming out of the dizzy. Ignore what it’s going in to at the moment. I assume this goes into coil negative?

You could pop the dizzy cap off just to confirm what's inside. The wire has the correct grommet & connector boot, but the colour's unfamiliar to me.

 

The brown wire it's connected to  would be an unfused permanent live if original. It would likely melt things if the points were closed.

 

Disconnect it & figure out what's on the other end of it. To be permanently live they're connected to the battery post on the starter solenoid, but there's at least one that piggy backs off a permanent feed at the fusebox - hopefully it's that and not live.

 

The distributor will be a type 45 or 59 they're almost the same, save for 59's using wiper points
