Hi!

I posted recently for advice on getting a new engine in! Thanks to those that helped, its in! :)

i'm now at a bit of a loss as to what connects where on the electrics.

Its a 1989 flame red, the new engine/gearbox is an a+ from a metro.

Does anyone know what should go where please?

Pic 1: I think that ground cable to the block is correct, i don't know what the other multicolour cable is. (bottom left)

(dont worry, that alternator is being replaced and mounted with proper bolts)

Pic 2: this cable with a spade by the spark leads is very short out of the dizzy, but i think it connects to the coil.

Connected to the coil already is a black cable, running from something metal and circular also mounted to the bracket the coil is on. I dont know what that is. (or if its connected to the right place! - perhaps its a metro thing?)

There is a multicoloured cable with no spade connecter on it (with 2 different colour sleeves attached) too - im not sure what thats broken off.

Pic 3: Multicolour cable again, as in pic 1.

Pic 4: Closeup of the short wire coming out of the dizzy

This is a project from 2005 that ive picked up for the first time again in the past month - so i have no idea what was connected to what originally, and the haynes manual sadly didn't seem to survive a move. I found some great diagrams on here, but they're very technical and I am not!

Hopefully someone can help based on the above so i can try turning it over and first of all seeing if i can at least get a spark! (and find out if this engine works)

Thanks,

J

Wiring in picture 1 looks correct, the black sleeving is there to protect the wire.

Picture 2 and 3 connectors join together.

I think the wire with no terminal may be oil pressure (white/brown)

The car is also wired for ballast resistor, make sure the white/yellow and pink/white are on coil positive.

Also verify that the white/yellow is connected to the starter. (this bypasses the resistive wire (pink/white) during cranking to give the coil 12v).

I will ask that the insulation is cleaned and colours noted in a post, We can then advise further to what you have

Oh and the vacuum advance pipe is missing from the distributor

The little round thing on the coil is probably a coil capacitor (I think that's what it's called) it stops coil causing electronic interference with the radio. Your vacuum advance on the distributor also needs connecting up to the carb.
The ground cable to the block? If you mean the green wire in the black insulation, that is for your temp gauge and is correct.
The wire with the missing end appears to be for the oil pressure switch.
I think the short wire from your dizzy is meant to be connected to your multi-coloured wire, but I can't make out the colour in the pic. I believe it should be white and black.

Thanks Cal! Vacuum advance pipe is en route!

Im actually colour blind so sorry for lack of clarity on colours! the best i have is multicolour, or single colour.  ill give them a clean tomorrow if i get the chance - and take a better photo, but from what youve said i think that should help me get a spark!

Thank you! vaccum will be connected, just dont have the tubing at the moment. it arrives soon.

Ground cable>block - yes i do mean temp gauge! didnt know what it was. You and Cal have both mentioned those should connect, and it does seem more logical as it can extend that far, but to the coil is a real stretch!

will try with this tomorrow, and if no joy, ill clean things up and take better photos!
