Trying to set timing but I can't get a signal to the timing light. The car idles at 900rpm with a live constant feed off the fuse box and ground off head bolt. I have tried turning the pickup 180 degrees, moving it closer to the dizzy and on other leads.

 

Timing light was working a month ago so thought this is odd. I have tried another timing light and this one has a light which lights saying check connection? I do have a spark from ht lead to cylinder 1.

 

Could it be that the spark/signal is too weak to pickup? or is there something else i can try before buying yet another timing light.......

Connect the positive for the timing light to the lead coming from the battery.

 

What was it that the other timing light did?

 

It is obvious but I need to check that you are in fact pulling the trigger?

Yes i have tried that pressing the trigger on both and holding down etc. Also tried connecting both timing lights directly to a fully charged spare battery. Before i had no issues.

I would try the timing light on another vehicle and if you get the same result and all the connections are good then the light must be dead.

Try the timing light on a different plug lead, just to see if it'll pick up on that instead.

Then I would do as the others have said (I left it out of my original comment to keep it simple). The other vehicle/engine can even be a mower etc.
