Just wondering if anyone can help, I’ve just finished a rebuild 1380 engine with a refreshed gearbox and converted to a pre verto clutch which is a MED ST2 kit. As per the below videos I’m getting this noise coming from the clutch at idle and gets louder if I rev the car at idle but disappears if I drop the clutch. Concerned it’s the idler bearing but this has all been renewed with a replacement transfer housing.

Secondly I’ve got a noise coming from the fan end, I’ve changed the alternator and water pump pulley but still happening.

Any ideas please on how I can work out where these noises are coming from without pulling the engine out at this stage ? The engine has covered around 400 miles so far.

Did you measure the idler gear clearance and shim accordingly?

Yes I had the gearbox rebuilt with Guesswork’s who also had the new transfer case housing I purchased so this could be measured and appropriate gasket was supplied for thickness needed.

Could it be to do with anything upon me installing the transfer case housing ? For example causing damage to any of the transfer case bearings if that’s possible at all ? Everything was new on bearings so struggling to understand the issue with this.

At the fan end, perhaps take the fan belt off and run the engine up briefly. If the sound remains that would rule out alternator, alternator's fan, waterpump, and rad fan.

I’ll give that a go, I’ve just replaced the alternator, belt, water pump pulley and crank pulley so might just be the fan that’s left to check ?

Flywheel end - it sounds like the Diaphragm could be just catching on a bolt that's a wee bit too long, check he timing cover inspection hole bolts and the engine mount bolts.

Fan end - it sounds normal for an Alternator is having a moderate load on it. Just check the temperature of it, it will get warm but you still should be able to put your hand on it. Check the output voltage at idle, should be around 13.5 - 13.8 volts.

As above the whining from the fan end sounds like the alternator working. Mine sounds exactly the same. Good luck

Flywheel end - as per Spider but if it persists - a changed wok or transfer housing there maybe a slight alignment issue- or something as simple as a throw out bearing regrease or a new one

Thanks for the reply’s, the clutch is a pre verto ( MED ST2 kit) previously verto set up. It only makes that noise at idle but when you press the clutch down it disappears.
