Hi, I'm currently restoring my 1973 Mini Clubman estate, and I'm unsure what colour to paint the engine. When I got the car, most of it was black, but I've recently started cleaning the engine to paint it and uncovered the timing chain cover, and it looks to be green, so I'm not entirely sure what colour it's supposed to be. Any help would be appreciated.

Early BMC A-series engines up to around 1970 were green all over, then black all over under British Leyland, until the 1980's onwards when A+ engine blocks/cyl heads were Red for 1275cc and Yellow for 998cc.

A 1973 Mini Clubman would have been black but your green timing cover may have been old stock during the changeover years or someone has fitted an earlier green cover as a replacement at some point, maybe sourced as a used spare part from a local breakers yard back in the day.

I think the original BMC green is ‘Land-Rover Bronze Green’.
Or do it gold and tell everyone it’s a BMC Gold Seal rebuilt engine 😆
