Basically, if you dont declare modifications to your insurers you are not declaring 'material facts'. Material facts are basically anything which, in the eyes of a prudent underwriter could affect the terms and/or premium applied to the risk.
Because RTA (road traffic act, the cover for third party injury/property damage you HAVE to have legally the Road Traffic Act funnily enough) cover is compulsory, you insurers cant not pay out a claim to a Third party for injury/damage. However if you have not declared all the material facts (i.e. mods in this instance) your insurance is effectively invalid from inception or when the mods where made.
What will happen is that A. Your insurers will pay the claim for third party damages/injury, then pursue you through the courts for the money (which incidentally could be millions, imagine losing control and going through a queue of people waiting for the bus). You dont have any choice whether to pay it or not, you will just be skint forever. B Is that the Police do you for driving without insurance, this is not that bad, probably a fine for less than your insurance costs yearly which is why people drive without it.
It is highly unlikely that you will go to prison for something like this unless you did cause multiple deaths but that would be more of a dangerous driving/manslaughter thing.
