Ok iv had winston for a year and a bit now, he started off his lie being built for rallying, with a 1310cc engine, cage, flip front, buckets but when i bought him all the rear subframe and ancillaries were about shot.

So after driving him for a year to and from college after having an 1275 and night out in the lincolnshire wolds with madmax and firends, and replacing the rear end in the summer, it eventually came for the time for my engine to die from lack of oil pressure and so i have been looking for different engine kits avauilable to see what i can afford. As i am at uni its taken me a while to save the money for an engien but hopfully in the next week i shall be taking a visit to morspeed for a new engine kit.... i shall keep updating with pics and info as it happens though there will be big breaks in between as i shall be returing to uni minus winston

We spoke to a guy called Simon, he used to work for M.E.D and some people on this site know of his work. I would have to say that he is probably one of the best guys to talk to when consulting about what kind of bits and bobs you need to put together to create the right balance for your engine. We spent at least 3hrs talking to him today and weve come away with some excellent ideas. I'll let flappy do the rest of the explaining.

oh and we left screaming with laughter at some of the things he had 'lying' around

ahem, 1460 full race sprint engine in the waiting area

he he thats them^^^
Well we set off early this morning and finally got to the workshop around 10:30 spoke to Simon, as many people have done in the past(he's a sound guy) and finally decided on his 1340 kit with a phase 2 cam, i was origionally going for a phase 3 in the outlook of rallying it, but looking the the "2" its more than enough to give me a fast ride to the grave yard! We had to wait for him to finish the block but didnt mind waiting after all i wanted to b there all day! I also took my head in for some larger valves which were only £35 inc fitting and lapping whihc was great! Simons work is class A, and i cannot fault it, i jsut dont know how he can charge so little! After he finished the block, all the bits were layed out as can be seen in the pic above and got talking about my head, as i never knew really how modified it was or where it came from. It turns out its an injection head thats been modifed to near race spec apart from the valves which has confused a few poeple that iv spoken to. After a good look around it hadnt really been marked by anyone so it seems that a small company must have done it, but have done a good job of the ports so all that needed adding was some larger inlets to make use of the rest of the modifying. So hopfully with this head , cam and 1340 cc block it should go like a rocket, and next week im going back to have the flywheel lightened just for a biot more acceleration. Acording to simon, i should be looking at around 95bhp at the flywheel which is more than enough for me!

Im hoping to start building next week so shall steel madmax's phone again for construction pics

ok iv got a few blury pics now of the old engine:

Head- this is b4 it had the neve alves and b4 it was cleaned up
Posted Image
Posted Image

The old block stripped and ready to go to Morspeed for exchange
Posted Image

The old block had very uneven bore diameters as the piston slapped in the cylinder it wore it very quickly!

Posted Image

Bit of a groovy pic
Posted Image

The crank and old pistons in my kitchen, mum would kill me if she found out!
As can be seen on the third psiton i managed to chip bits off them when taking them out(should have pushed them up rater than trying to drop them out the bottom of the block like you can do with an 850)

Finaklly a couple of very blury pics of winston, il try to get some better pictures next time im home

right, iv been back home to start the build. I set to on thursday night, i brought the block and bits into my kitchen where id be building most of it (iv got an ace mum). The first thing to do was clean the block and make sure it was spotless from surface rust, dust and acid residue. After doing this and slicing my hands a few times on the blocks machined edges, i set to following the MORSPEED instructions, cross refrencing with the haynes manual as the torque settings are a little different!

I placed the bearing shells in the caps and block on the mains! lightly oiling them all to make sure there would b a smooth fit! then placed the crank in and poped thrust washers in, and torqued down the middle bearing cap, making sure tha crank spun freely and checking the end float. After this the other two caps were placed on and torqued up! checked the crank again to make sure there was no tight spots and then turned the engine over to place the pistons in.

Using a borrowed spring compressor poped the first piston in making sure the bolts on the rod didnt hit the crank journal, b4 turning the block over and bolting the end cap on. After torquing it up i went to put the secont one one in and managed to snap the oil rng so im going back to morspeed this week to get another ring!Posted Image

After getting the other pistons in i set to on popping the followers and cam in, followed by the timing plate! here was the next problem. The 3 bolt cam retainer wehn on fine but then there was the 2 countersunk screws for retaining the plate to the bearing cap and block. I had normal bolts from the old engine, this was fine for a single row chain but fouled the duplex ones and so i had to file the bolts down for now. Then went on the gears, the gear on the crank was quite tight so i kept goign round the inside of it with some emery cloth to make it a little looser

eventually got the timing gear on and set to painting the block and popping the core plugs in.

Next order will include a heardened diff pin, new LCB and some countersunk screws!will keep upsated and get some more photos. Im hoping for it to be finished in 2 weeks so i ahve a week to install and run in the engie b4 a trip with madmax to peter baldwins rollers
