I got all the furniture from Argos and salvaged the fireplace from someone’s front garden and built the surround.

Hey, nice one! that cast iron fire insert is worth a lot of money! I should know - I have a few stacked away. :dontgetit: The "horse-shoe" type cast inserts are more rare, more popular - hence worth quite a bit! :)

I like the surround too, suits the insert nicely.

Cheers Silicon, it cost me £30 so I know I got a bargain and I love a bit of salvage.

Have you got any cast iron fire places to suit a Victorian front room as I need one to put in there also.

£30.....yup thats a bargain allright! :P

I do actually have some, mostly in need of some restoration (the odd few damaged / missing tiles, paint removal etc), but sadly the best ones have all had the back of the grate smashed in, so a gas fire could be installed - probably took ages to smash and bend the thick back plate out of the way, when it would only have taken 10mins to un-bolt. :)
I will get around to restoring them (providing I can find grates that mate up with the insert - not easy to get "spares" now), but they are being kept as a nice little nest egg for when the time is right. ;)

I also have a victorian / early edwardian gas fire (type that is designed to fit cast insert) that *WAS* all complete - till some knob-end trying to break into the garden shed stood on the radiants (the clay things that heat up) and smashed them all - doubt I'll get replacements any time soon!
fire was still in use, up until the late 1980's!

I'm also in the process of breaking apart an old gas cooker for scrap........a VERY old gas cooker (called Beamish open air Museum - they said it was too old for them! really!!) similar to this one: http://www.gasmuseum..._old_cooker.htm
Guess what - yup it was STILL in daily use until removal in 1999! (an old lady tenant - wouldn't use ANY modern stuff, still used coal fires for heat - refused to have the cooker exchanged (wasn't ours, so couldn't force her - neither could social services).....didn't like electric lights either - had to give in at the end when she couldn't get gas mantles for the gas lights anymore..... (some of the light bulbs still dated to the 1950's ! ) :P

we had another old lady tenant, just the same - her house was a time warp - still had the cast iron coal fired range.....and still used it (gas was too "modern" for her...she had a gas cooker, just never used it.....since 1898!) :dontgetit: Beamish didn't want that one either, didn't know the date but said was a very early one, so was past their period theme.

Got loads of gas lamps too, some are realy ornate brass, others just plain brass lamps. All come straight out of houses, and were still connected to the lead gas pipes!

<sigh> the things I've had to throw in the scrap pile because they were too old for beamish (and far too big / heavy for other musems to transport elsewhere in the country).......all still working - furniture too!.

Sorry about the pics Raz, had computer problems for a few days.

Here's the pics (bit late I know) :-

The silver things are the pegs for the clothes, found them in the bathroom fittings - thing they are ment for towels or for the backs of doors, to hang bathrobes on....or something. They didn't show up too well, but they are about 4 or 5 inches long, so you can hang multiple hangers on each one.

They thought of this 100 years ago too....

I wasn't able to take a pic of what it looks like with the interior light on.........because it's been nicked! :-

Had to take pic on my phone, digi camera memory card has finally given up and died (well, it was 8 years old and well used - can't complain I suppose).

Hope you can make out the details OK, might give you some ideas.

Yeah curtains rather than blinds but use a pole instead of a rail as I used a rail and they keep coming off the hooks, it's really annoying.
