I have a Squier Standard Stratocaster (no not a bass, a comment on fender ) and I love it so far...and no it's not the greatese guitar ever, but I think it's a good starter, and better than the one in the pack. And I can always upgrade the pick ups etc...

Not bad prices you guys have mentioned, either, which is groovyboogaloo. 
I shall pop down our local moosick shop when I get the opportunity to mount a serious cloak-and-dagger operation & see what they have & then scout about Binternet for much-cheapness....

Yep - a bass will be way too long for a mini boot... you might get away with hiding it behind the seats and covering it with something....

Hard to say for the amp as they vary so much in size... if it is just a mini-amp then quite likely...
