oh well..

timing cover will have to come back off again and I'll have to see what that bolt does without the timing plate and just going into the hole on its own

Did the bolt that isnt going in properly come out easy enough? Did it come out at a slight angle? If its been put in cross threaded then the threads are probably fecked and either need tap running down the hole depending on how bad they're or need to helicoil it. Give it a good clean and try and inspect the threads.

to be honest, I don't know how it came out, as it's right at the bottom down at the back. But i didnt have to force it to come out at all, just felt normal, to be honest.

But I'm kinda thinking that this might be my leak... It's right above the speedo cable area. When we changed that, it was absolutely coated in grime and oily stuff.

I haven't done this one up, because you can feel that it's just going in wonky... and I got a mirror down there to look at it and it's just at such an angle. But it won't go in any other way, at all!

I'm worried that its in a really bizarre place that you can't get a tap in there ;D

And I can't get the car to a garage, if it needs to be done

Did you tighten up the other bolts before you got to the awkward one? If so, loosen them off, give the cover a 'jiggle' (that's the technical term ;D) and get that one in, then tighten the others up.

Yeah, I did that ;D

I tried tightening the others, then loosening the others... then taking all the others out and having that as the first one

But I just can't doooo it

hmm, it's probably just coincidence that the awkward bolts right over the speedo drive. It does get nasty and clogged up with crud... though you did also find that mirror down there, so just maybe it has been the problem?

Yeah, i did think that about the mirror too ;D

Dunno

Guess I've gotta wait til the morning to see what it does and if there's anything I can do >_<

Is it possible to get a tap to sort out the thread all the way down there ? >_<

trying to think how much space is down there. Not much, iirc? Probably could be done, though it will be tight and awkward.

Sorry, not much help, am I ? ;D

Not completely, lol ;D

*If* the backplate threads are knackered, just swap it over.

could always drill a hole in offending subframe (if possible) and get long reach or extension for the tap

To change the backplate means removing the timing gears etc - once you have a backplate it is a cheap job but just needs time and patience - you need to make sure the cam timing is put back right. You'll also need the gasket that is behind the backplate.

To be honest with this problem and that dodgy bolt at the beginning I would replace the backplate for a known good one.
