I doubt the tracking car would have been a Mini Moke, until quite recently a 2CV was always the vehicle of choice for camera tracking due to its unique suspension. I suppose a Moke would have been more able to keep up with the Coopers in the tunnel though.

According to Philip Wrestler the second-unit director who filmed the sequence and the stunt man Remy Julienne the camera car was a Mini Moke.

More on the sewer scenes...........
The Alfa Romeo police car crashing through the sewer gate contained dummies and was fired out the tunnel with the same rig used to blow the Minis out the back of the bus. The remote control used was fired by a film crew member disguised as a football supporter who is seen to run in and shut the gate just before the crash.

(Loads more detail on all this is in the book and dvd of the Making of the Italian Job by Matthew Field.)

He certainly can, he can start his own thread to talk about them at any time. That's what a forum is about. This thread is not about tyre function or construction. The clue is in the name, and in the section for that matter. That is also what a forum is all about. Minimender started this thread to talk about something specific, lets stop diluting it with arguments of any kind please. Tyre mechanics are not interesting facts about Minis and are not Mini Chat. I was considering placing a similar reply to Avalanche235's to clear things up about tyres until Minimender asked us not to. I respected that, this is his thread and he's right it's not relevant to the reason he started it.

by the way, it IS up to the moderators and staff to decide what gets discussed where in our forum. It certainly isn't up to relatively new members.. If you want a thread where you can talk about something specific, go and start one.

Mini Trivia

The Mini has won the Monte Carlo Rally three times , 1964, 1965 & 1967 then again the Mini won the 1990 & 1991 Pirelli Classic Marathon. In 1994, the Mini returned to the Monte with Paddy Hopkirk at the wheel again as car No 37 and this time in L33 EJB .

Stardom has come to the Mini many times , following its amazing David v Goliath success in the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally, the Mini was immediately flown home to appear on the top Sunday night TV programme at the London Palladium. Five years later the abilities of the small car upstaged Micheal Caine in the popular Turin gold bullion car chase film ' The Italian Job'.

The original Mini Cooper concept was inspired by then World Champion F1 racing constructor - John Cooper.

I've heard that the Mini Cooper also made an appearance at the London Palladium in 1966 straight after the famous Monte disqualification and it's said that if there had been a Frenchman in the audience, they'd have killed him. LOL

Erm, guys. How many wheels does a mini have, I need to know now!
:D

And, now that ive read through properly, one of the several documentarys I watched had one of the film crew stating that they couldnt complete the tunnel loop (more than the once they missed) because it was too slippery to get around it..

There's a classic late 1960's black and white French movie (called 'A Man And a Woman' I think) and the leading man is a rally driver and it's set during the 1966 Monte. So I was surprised when even the French actors stated how the Cooper boys had been robbed of their victory.

Edit: Post removed for being irrelevant.

How about... The mini was only 10ft long until they added the bigger rear number plate light, it is now approx. 10ft 1".

Anyway - 10 wheels;

Four road wheels,
One Stearing Wheel,
One Spare Wheel,
One Flywheel,
Three Pulley Wheels,

Probably a few others too if you want?

Oooh also,

The first Metric threads in a mini are in the 10mm nuts used to adjust the handbrake when the set up was changed in the 80's.

Them any good?
