Didn't make much more progress, started raining and I was getting fed up with the rusted/rounded nuts & bolts.. Still, I managed to removed the suspension mounts & handbrake cable.. started on the rear subby mounts but as soon as I started I ran into problems.. because the thread of the bolt had been exposed over the years it had rusted, I soaked it in WD40 & took my time but as I got closed to the end of the bolt with the nut it started slipping.. rounded the nut :shy: The bolts will need replacing as will the subby mounts, so I might just crack out the angle grinder and cut them off.

I was also talking to a builder about my mini, he suggested I buy a tool which tightens itself on rounded nut/bolt heads.. sounds really useful, anyone know the proper name?

Might be talking about a 'nut splitter' which kinda does as the name suggests!

its not those ones he was talking about, they just break the bolt. They are called round-off sockets. They are shaped so that the more torque you put on them the more they grip the head. We use them at work to remove locking wheel bolts if they have lost the key!

They are brilliant, they are the ones you want :D

Couldn't find anything on those James! got a link? I'm sure either will do as I'll only be replacing what has come off anyway.

Image, depending on where the nut is, you could try a nice big pair of mole grips, they work wonders on rusted bolts with stripped heads ;).

Just another idea, plus they're useful for all sorts of other things.

Tried the big mole grips but no luck ;)

I ordered that cheap set of Torx Sockets that Carboy put the link up for, they only need to see me through getting this rear subframe off.. after that it'll be almost completely stripped.. just bits like the glass remaining & door furniture, but that'll all be sorted in the future.

Haven't managed to get any work done today as I've got some overtime at Tesco in a bit, and I think the weather is dismal again!

Garage is fully painted & empty of all the builders gear  so in 2 days time I'll be wheeling my shell in there with Dad :)

I wish I'd seen carboys post, those are not the sockets you want.

Those are torx sockets, they're not the same as the twist lock sockets you're looking for .

You want these:

Didn't think they looked like the right thing but I'd never heard of them before so I didn't know any different! I'll message the seller and see if he can cancel the order or something, thanks for that Deathrow ;)
