A lorry almost got me on the A1...
I was overtaking it, I must have been in a blind spot or something because it started to pull out to overtake another lorry. Either way I ended up driving on the grass verge (fortunately it was wide enough). End of the day,it could have been the end of me but it wasn't so never mind.
Didn't put me off the mini or overtaking lorries, just tend to drive with my lights on more often! Still have great amounts of respect for them as no matter who they work for, they are doing something some of us could do to the same level. I just need a brighter paint job!

Oh I've had a similar experience with a coach. Unfortunately it was the outside lane of the M6 and I had nowhere to go. Big plumes of tyre smoke, a rather light back end, and me swearing/shaking my fist a lot. 1st time it happens you learn how to avoid it straight away.
Now I always hang back until there's enough room to overtake as quick as possible. Worst thing you can do is sit and drive in a blind spot.

I do respect lorry drivers, since my dad was one for 13 years, and I do love trucks. But there is definitely something about Tesco lorry drivers. I know someone that turned off the M25 one morning on the way home from work, and a Tesco lorry came through the back door of his Rover... and didn't bother stopping! The car was a complete write off (to be honest if the fuel gauge dipped below the half it would have been a write off).
You have to give lorry drivers some credit - it must be one of the most tedious jobs in the world. You do thousands and thousands of dreary motorway miles, spend half your life in traffic jams and get screwed over by the management for measly pay. But surely no self respecting person would crash into someone and drive off.
However, I don't agree with your approach to this discussion, basically claiming that lorry drivers are idiots for driving at safe speeds. Think about the double-decker trailers - with that centre of gravity, they have to corner much slower than you in your mini. Roundabouts especially, they have to stick to about 12/13mph, and any faster and they'll tip over (like a lorry driver I know). At the end of the day, as someone else said, and with the words of Ian Dury ringing in my ears, just give it "a bit of grin and bear it".

the basic point of the thread, people like rob himself, kirk and me are trying to say is that we shouldn't call these speeds "safe speeds" for lorry drivers, we should call them legal speeds...
I know from personal experience that tesco are VERY jobsworth about pay, and quite rightly so...
tachos are always inspected for a breach of hours, and if there's any question about the legality of anything, then they withold pay until it's sorted. It is for this reason (and the fact that it's the law) that tesco drivers in particular are careful.
The fact that other lorry drivers choose to break the law is down to them, and on their license...
