If the Mini was doing 40, how fast must what looks like a Peugeot must have been going?

For a comparision, here's a BMW and a Volvo both doing 60 in a more or less head on collision.

Looks like any passengers in the Mini would have survived though.

My friends are always bringing up the fact that my mini is terribly unsafe, it really irks me. I know its not as safe as some cars, but then again, it can hold its ground. At motorway speeds, a shunt in any car will end badly - mini or Volvo.

all minis are unsafe at high speed collisions especially seen as they avnt got air bags(which can sometimes do worse damage)
just the way they were made back in teh day.

i very much doubt it. front seat passenger would be wearing the engine, rear passengers would have been largely intact and not mechanically trapped but due to the force of impact, you would expect Brain and Spinal injury, if they had not worn seatbelts, they would have been killed, but seatbelts would have probably caused liver damage (suspensory ligament literally cuts the liver in half) also it's not unusual for large impact casualtys to have a severed aorta. Twice i have known people to be concious and alert only to die immediatley upon being released from the car and laid onto a back board due to the aorta breaking and remaining in place until they are moved... and there's not much you can do about it.

this made me feel sick. the boyfriend is a policeman and used to work at a recovery garage, hes seen some sights and told me ALL about it, but to actually see a photo, god.
Airbags, are they that much safer?

Well this one stood up rather well to a 50mph head on with a larger car: -

You can read about all the gory details on this thread (scroll down to Ade's messages at the bottom). And yes he walked away from that.
