I Finally managed to spend a little more time stripping the mini down on Saturday.
Body wise I removed the windscreen and rear window, bonnet hinges, petrol tank and a couple of bits of trim.
Interior wise I removed the upper and lower dash rails, the seat belts, handbrake, the remaining bits of trim gear stick gator and cage to hold dials.
Engine bay wise I have removed the carb, accelerator and choke cables. Alternator, coil, dist, starter, brake and clutch master cylinder and radiator fan have all gone.
I was also able to give the radiator fan frame thingy a lick of paint whilst looking after my son today.
I finally feel like I’m getting some where now not to much more and i will be able to remove the engine and sub frames to begin the real work

seeing as you are removing the rear bumper seam, maybe you could go for a smoothy boot lid? click here then put your number plate on the rear valance. it looks pretty good

Well... I didn’t have a particularly productive week and weekend this one. I managed to remove the steering wheel / column, pedals and the exhaust when I had a couple of hours free during the week.
The big plan for the weekend was to spend Saturday removing the engine and subframe
Well my day went from bad to worse. Nothing would work I ended up spending 7 hours trying to shift it with no joy. I removed all the bolts to drop the engine and subframe out the bottom together. Except the 2 massive bolts at the top of the suspension mounts in the bonnet. I drove everywhere trying to find a socket / spanner to fit with no luck.

OK so I decide to cut my losses and lift the engine out on its own. That was no easier, had all the bolts out except 1. Its the little one holding the subframe to the engine under the clutch bell housing. In the end I removed the clutch arm and piston to get to it and finally removed it. By this time it was 7 and I was getting it in the neck from the Mrs and had to call it a day. Sunday I didn’t get anything done either as I wanted to spent some quality time with my son (unfortunately this doesn’t involve working on the mini yet, give him a couple more years), so Im just waiting for a bit of free time to lift this puppy free now.
Fingers crossed all will go to plan. Well nothing else can go wrong... Can it?
Mini-Chelsea - Im not to keen on the smooth boot actually. I thing i have decided to stick with the boot it has. I brought myself some led number plate lights during the week so plan to loose the massive box holding the original lights and make something smaller then just tidy up where the filler has come away.
Joe_m - I see where your going with this look (can look good on the right car) but i think the car needs a full respray to show its full potential. Not that the thought hasn't crossed my mind.

looks like ill be making my own then. i think ill buy a single skin fibreglass one and mod it to take a beetle boot light

I thought you had a game plan by pointing me in the direction of a smooth boot. lol.
The guy who did mine said he just welded to plates accross the sides of the original number plate reccess and filled the edges. I have pulled some of the filler away from one side as there was a little rust and cracks around. I will get a pic during the week so you can get an idea of what he has done. If you need any mesaurements or anything just shout.

Well after having a really busy week off last week and a busy couple of days at work this week I have finally been able to update my weekends progress. I had a blinding day on Saturday, I was able to remove both the front and rear subframes and engine.
Well removing the engine was a lot easier than expected. Once I had the correct size socket for the top subframe mounts that is. I simply lifted the body over the subframe and engine, job done. I also managed to remove the brake callipers from the front and the steering rack. But I’m on hold for now on mechanical parts and I’m going to concentrate to getting the body work sorted.
With that in mind I was able to fibreglass the back of the holes on the bonnet from the badge ready for filling. I have also started to rebuild the recess for the square number plate in the boot. The more I have started working on this boot the worse I have realised it is. The filler is so thick in places. Well all I can do is give it a try and if it comes out rubbish I will just buy a standard boot lid.
Tom - The plans are not to big, I’m looking to keep the original engine in for a while as my girlfriend needs to learn to drive and she cant get insured on my car, Once that is out the way I would love to drop a bigger engine in. In the mean time I'm gone tidy the bodywork, loosing the front and rear bumpers and smoothing in the arches in the process. I’m going to respray it in gunmetal grey (I think lol) The interior is going to be in a race style, no carpets, and with bucket seats etc. I would also love to add a centre dial Speedo to add a bit of retro feel to it. I have a few other small original touches I would like to include but details of these will follow as and when they happen or the ideas come to me lol.
