Seeing as I have been relatively busy with the mini recently I though it was about time I got on here and updated you all with my progress. My Son has finally started nursery this week so instead of waking up and looking after him when the wife goes to work (The trouble with working nights) I will now have around 8 extra hours a week to work on the mini :-D The updated should be coming thick and fast now.

The roll cage mounts are all welded in, cleaned up and in primmer.

I finally have the roll cage all painted, it is now wrapped in about 100 foot of bubble wrap and in various storage places including under the our bed and suspended from the ceiling in the garage in a desperate attempt to stop it being chipped or scratched.

I decided I really did need to look at upgrading the brakes so brought myself a set of 4 pot callipers with all the metro drive shafts hubs etc as well. I have started to get these sorted but they will need quite a lot of work to get them ready to be fitted. The pistons are well and truly seized and one of the bleed nipples has sheered of.

The fuel tank I ordered was delivered on Tuesday so I have made some brackets to hold this in place. Nothing special but will do the job. It’s a snug fit and I will be fitting some foam tape between the corners and the tank. But I am not sure if there is a need for a strap over the top or not. Its tight enough that it will not jump out or anything under normal driving but I guess if the car rolled it would come out so best to get one made up.

My mate from the body shop came over the other weekend to give me a hand getting ready for paint. Still a good days worth of sanding to be done to get a nice finish on both the front and rear valances. But hopefully should be ready for paint by the end of the month. Funds allowing.

Talking of paint I have decided on another colour. I gave my mate the paint code for the Fiat burnt orange I had originally decided on but when he turned up he said ho could not find it in their charts so brought them round. Big mistake! A couple of hours later and I have decided on Lotus Scandal Green with a black roof and black arches. The picture below does not show it to well as it has a really nice metallic in it. I was a little bit unsure until last week I saw an Elise in it and that is it now.

In preparation for painting I have finally removed the doors, this is something I should have done a long time ago but due to some numpty previously welding the bolts under the wing of one side on and rounding off 2 of the others I was a bit unsure of how to get them off and if I really needed to.

Due to the thickness of all ratchet screwdrivers I could find I decided to make a nifty screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the door to the hinge. I am a little worried about refitting once painted so may just remove the old hinges completely and get some new ones. Any suggestions or alternative ways to get the doors back on?

I could not decide what to do about the inside roof of the car, I originally wanted to paint it the same as the car but my mate advised the finish may not be great as the paint will be sagging down and spraying at this angle may not be that easy. I did not really want to go to 1 the expense of a head lining 2 the hassle of fitting one and 3 having a stripped out interior I did not think it would look right. I have therefore painted it with just plain old black Hammerite using a foam roller, I have only done the first coat at present but all looks ok. It will defiantly need at least another 1 or 2 coats but I am more than happy. No pictures at present but will update when I have some.

Hey Jack

I got the tank from a guy on ebay, (proparts-europe) is the seller. He has them up quite often at a start price of £79.99. I droped him an email as he did not have one listed for a while and it sold me one direct for the start price plus shipping  Real result.

It is a nice size and should still give me room to get a pump nozzel in there, also has internal baffels.

Well, it has been a while and by the looks of things my last update was in April, I have been manic busy recently with work, and life out side of work (especially now we have another baby due in December) but most importantly progress with the Mini has been good. Time for an update and a bombardment of pictures a feel.

I think the best thing to do is to just summarise what I have done so far and load some of my pics below (sorry they wont be in order and seems like i am missing some of the most recent), just give me a shout if you want to see any more pictures of anything as I have taken hundreds (literary hundreds if not thousands) or any more details of anything.

Well here goes.

It is finally painted, I decided against the bright green in the end and decided to go for a subtle colour, this decision was made due to a number of factors, cost being the biggest. I decided that even with a spray job done by my mate as good mates rates I could not really afford what I wanted and this would reduce funds for other parts of the build. With the idea that the car would never be a show car and purely something for the weekend I decided to go for a bit of a sleeper look and decided on satin paint and to save on costs further I have sprayed it myself using rattle cans. I think the entire spray job has cost me about £80 so I bargain really. I am really pleased with how the body has turned out but I am not particularly pleased with the roof due to some areas looking patchy. I will tackle this at a later stage with either a re-spray or silver and grey vinyl union jack.

The roll cage is fully painted and fitted

Doors are fully built up including home made Perspex sliding windows

Rear opening windows have been replaced with Perspex opening windows using the original frames.

Both front and rear screens have been refitted

Most of the wiring has been completed just a few earths to tidy up and final connections will be made internally once I have made my dash to fit, on the dash will be an internal blade fuse box, battery cut off, toggle switches to replace the current rockers and my new Acewell speedo.

Front and rear sub frames are in but still need final setup completed.

Pedal box is all in along with brake and clutch cylinders and some of the pipe work

Steering wheel and surround, handbrake (still needs connecting) and gear stick are all fitted, internally along with the relocated washer bottle.

Head lights, rear lights, indicators, grill, mirrors and wipers all fitted externally.

Arches have been test fitted and are now painted black, just waiting on some of the joining trim before they are riveted in place hopefully nest week.

I have ordered my seats fibreglass ones from JK composite and they should be delivered any day this week or early next week. Once I have them I need to make up some mounting brackets and I can then run my fuel lines, battery cable and a couple of other wires internally.

Next job will be to hang the doors and then crack on with some of the mechanical parts such as refurbishing my 4 pot brakes.

The Engine will be the next big hurdle so I have been thinking about specs and will make a final decision around Xmas time I think (all depends on what parts come up for same in the mean time I think)

I will try and keep the updates more regular, but being so busy and the only time I really have to update my thread being around 4am (precisely when the site goes down every day) is can be a pain.

Cheers

Dan

Thanks Guys

Paint job looks fantastic, I have been considering a satin job.. same reason as you, costly! what paint did you use?

Of all things I have used Plastikote, I had heard of a few people using is for rat look cars or using the full blown gloss as a cheap fix so had a look around at the satin and matt colours they had available. Then tested a few different ones out on a spare panel before choosing this colour, I even decided to test how it stood up to dirt etc as I did have concerns about how easy it would be to clean but it seems to clean off ok.

I would avoid the black as I mentioned before I am not too happy with how the roof has turned out, as it seems to look a little patchy (think this could be over spray from my spraying technique possible though). Hopping to get some WURTH satin black in the next couple of weeks to repaint it with.

Bit more of an update, I collected a second hand Jonspeed super charger setup today, almost everything i need. I had better start collecting a few more parts for the engine now then.

Cheers

Dan

A little more of an update.

My Seats arrived the other day, I am really pleased with them they are so light and a lot more comfortable than I thought they would be. I think they still may need some padding made up as you will feel every little bump with them.

I have mocked up some brackets out of 6mm MDF and plan to get the positioning right with the mdf before transferring to 5mm alloy.

Arches are all painted and fitted using self tapping screws, I like the finish of using the self tapping screws but have a horrible feeling that they may corrode so plan to paint a few black and see how they look before changing them all.

And finally the big one, collected the second hand jonspeed supercharger kit, now i just need to make a decision whether i stick with the 998 or go for a 1275.
