Wow, just seen this topic. Suppose the good news is that it should have been much cheaper and easier to change/rebuild the short block than sort out a FUBAR'd JKD 5 speed box! Glad you managed to get it all sorted.

Odd that so much damage has been done, I can see Graham's reasoning behind the valve-train wear, but what about the drop gears (which is what probably screwed up the bottom end).

my engine builder's thoughts were that there was probably bearing damage from when the engine was first built by Rover

mine had much more damage but only on 1 lobe

if you look at my topic in the technical section i think Dan comes up with the most likely reason, can follower got stuck and would not spin

So what the new engine spec then?

it's now a 1330 with minispares high torque cam

using my stage 3 minisport head, HIF44 with K&N filter and single box RC40 with maniflow LCB

not big power but a very drivable engine

speaking to Simon this cam works with the 1.5 rockers ok so i will keep them

I'd say the follower too. Think there'd be evidence of damage elsewhere if it was further up the valve train. any marks on the follower's side?

Either of those 2 failures would've been hard on the oil 'n could've got the other started. Maybe the valve first as it seizing would create more load on the tranny gears when on overrun but the gear going awol wouldn't load the valve.

So possibly bearing failure on the drop gears, resulting in them getting chewed up and releasing a tonne of swarf into the oil, bit of swarf gets stuck down the side of the follower, leading to it getting stuck and the above damage...?

i think thats the most likely reason so far

but remember this is my second gear box, the first one the diff went bang and could of caused some damage

that was about 18-20k miles ago and the oil pump was replaced but engine was not striped
