1) Check your Haynes for gaps but the contacts are aka the points, the spark forms between them. They can wear in which case it won't fire and if the gap aint correct (i.e. too large or too small) it also won't fire.
2) The rotor arm spins round pretty fast, and a spark forms with each ht lead which then goes up to the spark plug and if firing in the correct order, voila!
3) The condensor could need replacing? Little cylindrical thing in distributor
4) Distrib cap itself could need replacing.
5) Check spark plugs are clean/wire brush em if not and haynes it to check gap is right again.
6) Check ht leads themselves are clean and the metal surfaces are able to function correctly i.e. not pitted/corroded.

Well went out there earlyer, cleaned the spark plugs up, tried starting it and the battery died

So ill go out tomorrow and clean the other stuff twiggy said about and give it another go.
