As I understand it, and I have just read a bit about it, due to the UK opting out of the Schengen agreements, you still need a passport to enter mainland Europe and to return to the UK. Once there however, you can apply for a visa which will allow travel between the countries - which will include all of the three we need.

I know thats not much help though.

French Immigration may have said that, but what about calling either the British Embassy or French Embassy to claim a Visa of some kind? You never know...(although that does kind of contradict what I said above).

Do you not need your passport to get a Visa though??

I think you should sneak into the country, (by hiding in someones boot) and then ringing the British Embassy and tell them you lost your passport.

You know it might just work.

Failing that, maybe ali has an idea? he works at the port? lol

You don't need a passport to travel within the EU, just a national photographic identity card, your photocard driving license is recognised for this purpose.

The only issue you may have is with the Ferry company, I know all airlines require a passport, even for flights within the EU, but you would have to ring the ferry company to check what they require in terms of identity of their passengers.

Haha. I was actually thinking that I might get myself into the back of a lorry crossing the Channel Tunnel. Either that or I could get myself a row-boat and set off from Roscoff early tomorrow morning!

Well, as it stands, I have just made an appointment with the Newport Passport Office at 8.30am on Friday. Hopefully they will be able to give me one there and then, though usually when passports have been lost or stolen they tend to post them, which is a bugger. Hopefully it will be OK and I will get a flight to Frankfurt (?!) on Friday night. I know this means that i will miss quite a bit it but I guess that it's better than staying at home being miserable! Does anybody have any experience of these types of appointments with the Passport Office - am I likely to be able to pick it up on the same day?

Its not the case for the UK. We opted out of the agreement to allow this, and as we are not a member of the group of countries that do allow it, we need a passport to enter them. Getting back would be easy, just say you have lost your passport and the British Embassy in Germany would be able to sort things out for you.

It really is easier for immigrants to move around than it is for someone who is perfectly entitled to travel to Europe.

Im sure someone knows how to sail across the channel. Just turn up on a random beach, and we will find you!

On a serious note, I hope you get eveything sorted easily on Friday!
