From memory

Today its a points awarded system, engine age, suspension components age ideally from one car from the same era ie the original car

The shell must be brand new, then the dvla decide based on the points to give you an age related plate or not and the shell is then stamped

How come you can put your car on a personal plate and then change the personal plate over when you get a new car? Surely that is the same thing? Sorry, im a bit confused about the whole thing! :D

That's the stupidity of the system and why I might have some sympathy with the guy with the 64 MPI. Though

"people are very sad if all they have to do all day is talk about whether or not the car should be on a q plate. if it was it would be worthless!"

is very much nail on head, as Jupitus noticed too.

If you build a car out of used bits and can't prove the actual age of the components you get a Q plate.

But there's something called the Cherished Number Scheme that allows you to keep the registration off your old car and transfer it on to your new car. It's how private number plates are kept. You can't transfer a registration on to a Q plated vehicle as far as I'm aware. It obviously keeps those who have enough money to waste it on ostentatious tat happy but makes a total mockery of the argument that Q Plates are needed as Registration marks indicate the age of the car they're screwed to.

I'll give the seller credit for acknowledging the comments of we "Anoraks", I hope he took the time to read them and will explain the points we raise with any buyer. As it appears someone else has found out, the law's view is pretty clear.

A replacement shell not only has to be brand new: it has to be the same as the original - you can't wrap your old Beetle up in fibreglass to look like a vintage Ferrari. Admittedly, that's going to be open to interpretation with Minis, but the onus is on the owner to prove their car meets the regs.

Just don't buy it, if it is stolen then it's down to the buyer to spot that.

no body said it was stolen, if you think they did then you really need to go back to the start of the topic and read it all again, you are missing the point ;)

i wish he hadn't used the term "the anoraks", it looks like i started it all :D

at the end of the day he as admited it should be on a Q plate and if it is he will loose money, because he has said that, this really should be looked at by an official department, end of.

no further coments ;)

Having read the above posts and even what the seller has said on e-bay etc etc I think the car is actually illegal.

(1) The original car has an identity and that is shown on the current registration plates and no doubt the V5.

(2) The second hand shell will almost certainly have had an identity and a V5.

If someone takes the identity of one vehicle and places it on another then that is against the law.
You can transfer the registration plate provided both vehicles are legal and tested or within the first 12 months of SORN but you cannot transfer the identity of one vehicle onto another which originally had an identity.

That car shouldnt be on the road as its illegal, anyone buying such vehicle may find it very difficult to insure as you have to inform the insurance company of any modifications.

Nice looking I will agree but just a pile of bits really as it cannot be used legally.

This Q plate thing, is it really such a big issue wrt the value of the car?

Yes, because Q platers are:

1) difficult/more expensive to insure,
2) difficult to sell,
3) not tax exempt.

The one upside is that they are exempt from an MOT exhaust emissions test - thats why lots of rally cars are on Q plates.
