In the Q: section of the auction

Q: your mini is being slated on the mini forum, so bunch of . I tell you I sold a mini van to a kid he looked over the thing for over an hour complainig that it was not an original 1970 van but a latter 1980s van yet he still bought it then 2 weeks later said he was not happy and wanted his money back due to the fact that it was not a 1970 van I refused to give him his money back he took me to court over it and youll never belive it but he won the day???????????? He knew what he was buying befor he gave me the money I never held a gun to his head and the kick in the balls was I had to collect the van over 200 miles away and he ended up with over £400 worth of compensation. Just be carfull this does not hapen to you make it very clear with a receipt of what has been done to the mini. Buy the way it looks great wish I could have it lol Thanks Sean 17-Aug-08

A: thanks for the info. people are very sad if all they have to do all day is talk about wheather or not the car should be on a q plate. if it was it would be worthless! i was at mini in the park today and saw a 1990 mini mayfair which had a 1964 b plate on it. it had nothing 1964 about it. it even had all the mayfair stickers on it. everyone does it. its just to what extent its been done. i cant see how me building this car pretty much from scratch from parts ive bought and trying to keep it origanal as possible and looking like it should is so out of the ordinary? at least its not just had a set of number plates screwed on it. at least its trying to look like what it is. if we all went by the letter of the law then almost all of the cars you see at shows would be on a q plate. you show me a 49 year old mini thats been used all its life that has the origanal engine, glass, subframes etc, because if it hasnt according to everyone whos sad enough to coment on things that dont concern them it should go on a q plate! but im sure that who ever wins this will know exactly what it is and take it as that. many thanks to you and all of you who have written to me letting me know about all the anoracks comments.

I can see his point but he is missing the difference between new and second hand parts.

I just want to confirm that I was really serious about buying, what is a really great looking car - if it had the late plate on it then thee would not be a problem at all. Its the early plate that causes issues, and the fact its registered as a 1960 odd car.

My old TVR had a 1989 plate on it, its a private plate, but its still registered as a 1999 so the example of the Mayfair does not really help his arguement.

Why wont he register it as the MPI! I would be straight in there with my money!

The salient point for me is highlighted above... this guys knows that to do the proper thing and put it on a Q plate would lessen it's value. He hopes to make a buck based on selling the car as tax exempt.

Whats the hell is original about it

MPi loom, MPi engine, Mpi Fuel Tank, mk7 shell, disc brakes, new subframes, late model interior

Just what is original on the car, even the center binacle is from a later car

Dont get me wrong its a really nice car, but its not a 1962 mini

you show me a 49 year old mini thats been used all its life that has the origanal engine, glass, subframes etc

Not exactly a valid defence if you get caught for doing it.

It's funny how all of the questions from bidders shown on his listing are very complementary about his car, and *woman of ill repute* off anyone who is saying it might be a ringer. Almost as if he's making up these questions and posting them himself - surely not!

How come you can put your car on a personal plate and then change the personal plate over when you get a new car? Surely that is the same thing? Sorry, im a bit confused about the whole thing!

say it was a 1998 car, you can have the personal plate on it, from say 1967 but the V5 will still say 1997 car. This guy is taking a late MPi and saying its a 1960's car, which is wrong.

Ahh, but he cant say that its a different shell with different engine, without it going on a Q plate, yes?

Correct!

Why he doesnt use the correct plate, the late MPi plate I really dont know. I think its a great car, if it had late plates on it then I would really want it and bid. What he is worried about is that if it gets put on a Q plate it will loose all value.

This Q plate thing, is it really such a big issue wrt the value of the car? i know in this case it would lose tax exempt status, but its only a number plate, why would a Q really devalue the car? With it being a Mini I wouldn't have thoguht it would make any difference, if its stunning, no rust it would be worth exactly the same to me as a 1990 car or a 1970 car of the same standard.

In fact, if it was on a Q, then at least you don't need to worry about it having been inadvertantly ringing in its past.

would not bother me.... but o... the purists.... MITP was awash with them lol

To be honest, it wouldn't bother me either, really, given that I don't honestly believe any real intent to break the law exists in this case... however, I do think that arguing 'loads of others do it, why not me?' is a bit of a cop out, and the least he could do would be to have gone through the right channels to register as it should be... if I wanted a mini in nice shape and it was advertised with all those details, and it came with a Q plate as a result I would still give that example very careful consideration.

made up story.
i have a 1962 mini, in 1978 i bought a new shell and swopped the bits over but had to fit a new front subframe because the tower mounts had changed, because the law was diffrent then i kept the 1962 redg, in 1996 the engine blew so i fitted a mpi engine and all the bits to make it run, told swanse sp about it, over the next couple of years i fitted many new parts, in 2007 i bought a new mk7 mpi shell of ebay (yes they do have them on there)and swapped all the bits over and told swanse sp but they said i could keep the 1962 redg, now i want to sell it, can i class it as a 1962 mini or will i upsett people?

Obviously that isn't an original shell, but it is stated on the add that it's a later shell

Just don't buy it, if it is stolen then it's down to the buyer to spot that.
