What do you get with a side mounted radiator: easy access to dizzy and its high maintenance internals; a slightly shorter or less crowded engine bay giving a marginal advantage in frontal impacts; shorter hoses & a more compact cooling system that takes less coolant so warms up better; forced airflow for the sake of a bit of twisted sheet steel screwed on to the water pump, what price an electric fan in 1959 on a car with a marginal profit margin?

Hmm, actually BMC made a loss on every mini that left the factory, the only way they got money back from each car was from selling spare parts at higher than cost prices.
Not sure how things progressed monetary wise after the Leyland take over
Hate to be picky!

F**k me lads, you don't half go on >_< . Aren't there more important things in your lives to worry about?

Email response from Mr Robson, who has now read this thread.

"Dear Ju,

Thank you for letting me see the snide threads.

Since I'm not registered on that web site, you might use what follows in any way you want :

** Columns are meant to stir up controversy - so it obviously does its job

** The man who says 'If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it' - would rather read a knitting pattern, The Holy Bible, or a Labour Party manifesto.

** The radiator isn't in the inner wheelarch panel then ? Oh really - it all depends on what you mean by 'in' - for without a series of slots in the inner wheelarch panel, and the radiator right behind those slats, how on earth would it function ?

** I am accused of suggesting that a fore-aft engine position would be better. Nonsense. I have re-read the Column, and it was never suggested - nor would I suggest it.

** 'What has this man ever done, regarding designing cars' - well, does design work (as a young man) on Jaguar Mk II, E-Type and Mk X models qualify ? And what about conceiving the specification of the Triumph Spitfires which raced at Le Mans and went rallying in the 1960s ? And managing the teams which ran them ? Oh yes, and I nearly forget, I was an integral member of the team which designed and developed the Ford Group B RS200 of the 1980s.

** I have, of course, owned and driven all manner of Minis, rallied in Mini-Cooper S types, amd was/am as close to the BMC 'works' rally team as any non-staff member was ever likely to be in the 1960s.

** If ANORAK thinks I am a pillock, can you gently ask him how old he is, and how much experience of the real world he actually has ? I have rather a lot, as I think you know ....

** No-one researches for me. I do my own research - and those are my own opinions.

** If the respondent thinks the Charles Griffin interview was turgid, that was a function of what Charles said, rather than what I thought. And if it was turgid, and I am useless, why was I the only writer/historian he would see in his retirement ?

** A front-mounted radiator would not necessarily have needed an electric motor. I distinctly recall a transverse engine/front-drive Peugeot of a few years later , with a front-mounted radiator, which had a belt driven fan whose belt completed two 90-degree turns - and it worked.

** I have probably driven more of the world's cars than ANORAK (including some which could exceed 170 - 180mph) so maybe I am allowed to bring a broad judgement to a topic ? How many different types of car has ANORAK driven ?

** If one of the respondents thinks I am not a good event commentator, how is that I am repeatedly hired for top-level International events, which include the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Race Retro, the MSA Norwich Union Classic Run, etc, etc, etc .... ?

- - - - - - -

On the whole I am quite happy for you to copy and paste as much of this as you want on to a response of your own, pointing out that it came from me, and that the whingers can contact me direct on my own e-mail address if they want to vent any more spleen ...."

And in a second mail

"I also forgot to answer someone else who wondered if I had done anything except write as a 'pillock' ?

** Competed in rallying as a co-driver in the 1960s, including winning an International rally with Roger Clark (Ford-mounted), and winning major team prizes on the RAC and Monte Carlo rallies.

** And, by inviitation, carried out motoring-themed lecture tours in the USA, in Australia, and in South Africa. In most cases, was asked to make several repeat visits, so someone must believe in me ...."

Now I can't be bothered to be the umpire in yet another c*ck fight on a forum. I don't have a c*ck myself, I just like playing with them, so if you want to take issue with the original writer of this obviously deeply offensive article (which I haven't read), then I can PM you Graham's email address.

*skips back off to the real world where there are more pertinent issues to occupy her attention*

Hmm, actually BMC made a loss on every mini that left the factory, the only way they got money back from each car was from selling spare parts at higher than cost prices.

I heard that there is no evidence to show that BMC made a loss on every Mini sold, I often hear the same about when Rover were making them too, when in actual fact it was one of the most profitable parts of Rover.

** The radiator isn't in the inner wheelarch panel then ? Oh really - it all depends on what you mean by 'in' - for without a series of slots in the inner wheelarch panel, and the radiator right behind those slats, how on earth would it function ?

:errmm: Does that mean the clutch is in the drivers side wheelarch? There is a big difference between being one side of a metal partition and not.

well, I certainly won't be buying mini mag

Jebus Maph, she's only got a different opinion to some people, and is interested in seeing that this writer gets his chance of a comeback! >_<

Couple more points though. Did BMC's ST department ever see fit to move the radiator to the front in their Works cars?

And who is this Charles Griffin bloke?

Asking for a mature discussion rather than just a series of personal insults is a bit different to trying to stick up for a guy you might know personally and has no way of defending himself.

yet further evidence of the keyboard warrior culture that has grown on this site in the last year.

at the end of the day the old boy has more experience of your little rust buckets than you have yet still you call him a "pillock", well i would say it takes one to spot one.

Jammy i would lock this because its bulls h i t!

I'm young, eager to please and willing to travel! >_<

But on a serious note...

I've not read the article yet, some of us who don't have subscriptions can't read it yet :P
So until then I'm not going to comment on this ;D

I've just read this thread from start to finish, and found it most entertaining.

Anorak, I know it gets said in so many of your anti magazine topics, but for your own health you really should stop reading / subscribing to them.

Its great to read one of these topics where the target is actually given the opportunity to defend himself! Nice one.

On the subject itself, a magazine that only goes on about how amazing the Mini was without any negative comment at all, would be boring and lose credibility.

I haven't read the article yet...but...

Mr Robson is representing that magazine with his articles and he will be associated with that article to Mini enthusiasts, especially when the said magazine article is being discussed.

Therefore I think that some of Mr Robsons remarks are very childish and petty (coming from a t 20 year old) and has therefore now lowered my opinion of Mini Mag.

I love Mini Mag and because of Mr Robson's response (not his article, as I haven't yet read it, but I do not like it has he does seem to slate the mini every month) I almost feel tempted to stop my subscription. After all, if a snotty nose kid treats you like rubbish in a shop they work in, you don't go back to the shop.

That was his chance to fully justify what he was saying, and he blew it by being childish and competitve with Anorak.

Immature & opinionated. You have it in one. Or two.

I think you misunderstood what I was saying above, Maph. It was actually a lighthearted observation that this practice of shredding another person on an open forum (whether the other has a means of response or not) seems to be (in my experience at least) confined to the male population of this forum. I am happy for you to show me a thread where any of the female members engage in this type of exchange & I shall retract my immature comment!
