Two significant achievements recently - frontend is now mounted (made quicker by giving up on hinges) and so is the dash!

What a faff the dash is! I don't think I'd bother with a fibreglass one again but then it was very cheap....

As well as the two usual bolts on the top dash rail I also made up three brackets that bolt it to the lower rail. You can see the lower left and right bolts in the picture,  there are two more under the centre part.

I've got to take it off again to cut the dials in, when I do I'll take a picture of the brackets. They are simple enough to make but are pretty funky shapes! I used some spare copper brake line to rough shape them and then formed the 'proper' ones from aluminium.

A little more progress...

Dash built up:

And in place with steering wheel:

As mentioned above, here are the mounts I've made up to hold the dash forwards. I'm waiting to see how they hold up when they have the full weight on but it's pretty solid with what's there.

Aside from the dash, the headlights are now in so the front could be mocked up to get make sure it all still fits:

No chance, I don't like Webers and see little point in switching until you reach the limits of the SU - at which point I'd switch to injection.

They are free-er flowing but not enough to concern me with a near standard 1275. The plan is to warm the engine the up but not enough to warrant switching the SU out for something that is more complex and only offers marginal gains. As said - if I get the engine to a state of tune where the SU becomes the restriction, carbs will replaced by injection.

Not fussed by noise - function over form. It's also got to get through the 100db sound check at Castle Combe! >_<

Dash is finished! And now I know I'll never be an automotive upholsterer, what a pain!

Switch panel wasn't much fun either, 19mm holes with a hand-held drill.....must get a pillar drill....

Latest addition - an oil catch tank. It was an el-cheapo one (as I couldn't face paying for another custom tank, not yet anyway) so hose connections aren't ideal but it's better than venting to air or firing it all back into the carb!

Last two jobs in the engine bay are to drill out and plumb in the heater outlet and get an air filter!

At the other end - freshly painted Mrk2 light clusters with polished lenses and a Mrk2 Fiesta fog light....

And finally that tired looking grill pictured above has been cleaned up and repainted (about a day's effort which is made very annoying as it's the 2nd time it's been done after it was damaged a few years ago despite never being fitted to the car!).

z6V5kSG.jpg?1

Just needs a quick mop over to take out the imperfections and it'll get packed away (carefully) until the front end is painted!
