Looks like your getting on well, welding comes in time.

When you got those subframes powder coated were they blasted at the same time within the price of £85?

Yep, two subframes and a box of about 30 bits!

I so hope by local powder coaters are like that, can't wait to get my hands on some more shiny bits

How do you wind up in more debt if they offer you less loan? :S

:shifty:

Working on a solution.

I need to break down the rebuild into parts, work out what parts I need for each section and add up a rough price.

+ Front subframe.
- Suspension.
- Brakes.
- Mounts & bushes.

+ Rear subframe.
- Suspension.
- Brakes & handbrake.
- Mounts & bushes.

+ Engine.
- Ancillaries.
- Steadies.
- Twin carbs?
- Exhaust.

+ Interior (bare minimum for a while)
- Homemade dashboard.
- Two front seats.

+ Exterior brightwork.
- Wing mirrors.
- Fog & reverse lamp.
- Bumpers & grille.
- MK1 boot dressings.

+ Panels.
- To be decided.

Definitely will! what I can do is pass off the 'poor student can't afford much mini', as a 'stripped our bare minimum lightweight mini'

But that's my aim anyway, inspired by Paul Wiginton to be honest. He's been developing his mini for 5 years now I think, which is what I want.. make it more lightweight, make it more responsive, handle better, accelerate faster, be faster :D

Got the finance 'talk' tomorrow with my parents, I'll start breaking that list down :shifty:

Get a pair of reinforced FG doors and sliding polycarb windows, and fit the doors using external hinges.
You'll save about 30/35 kg and achieve a very retro look without spending a fortune.

That's a good possibility, does save a hell of a lot of weight too.. just don't think it'll be that practical & I don't think the insurance company will like all the fibreglass.

Ignore the below, just talking to myself

Getting as much as I can from good old mini spares, but there are the odd things sourced elsewhere.

+ Rear brakes.
- BRAKE ADJUSTER AND 2 TAPPETS KIT, £6.04. (minispares)
- BRAKE ADJUSTING SPANNER, £4.65. (minispares)
- HANDBRAKE LEVER GAITER ON REAR BACKPLATE x2, £4.60. (minispares)
- WHEEL CYLINDER REAR GENUINE x2, £20.68. (minispares)
- BRAKE SHOES SET REAR, £8.91. (minispares)
- SUPERFINS, £52.00. (minimail)

- Screw for brake drum x2, £0.40. (moss)
- Bolt, washer & nuts for back plate to radius arm, £3.30. (moss)

Total - £100.58.

+ Rear suspension.
- DAMPER LOWERED HEIGHT REAR GAZ SINGLE x2 £70.16. (minispares) (bought)
- GREASE CAP x2, £9.50. (moss)
- RUBBER CONE x2, £78. (minispares)
- SUSPENSION KNUCKLE JOINT x2, £5.40. (minispares)
- REPAIR KIT FOR RADIUS ARM x2, £18.50. (moss)
- SUSPENSION ADJUSTABLE RIDE HEIGHT CONES COMPLETE CAR SET, £48.40.

Total - £159.80.

+ Handbrake & lines.

In a nutshell, I'm now using my student overdraft .

I don't think it'll stretch as far as getting her MOT worthy, but it's going to jump me a big big step forwards, good enough for me

Can't promise another update as I leave this sunday, but keep checking :techsupport:

The good thing is though, is that now you can source and buy parts and prep them up at uni. Then once you come home for christmas, just have 3 great weeks of working on the mini in a nice warm garage (i'm assuming you'll have a little heater of some sort in there).

And to top it off, you can get mini stuff for christmas aswell lol.

They're quite practical as Mk1 doors were..LOL
I would be worried more by their strength in case of accident..thats why i dont have neither FG front and FG doors.

Same here, maybe for a weekend only / trackday but for every day use I'd stick to steel.

Is weight saving that much of a must?

I think I'll definitely be sticking to steel, and MK5. Unless a cheap pair of MK1 doors pop up somewhere.

Weight saving is a must, simply means faster acceleration & a higher top speed. Once I drop on a turbo and rebuild the engine, properly with hi spec internals, it'll all pull together. Hopefully by this time I will have a 'sensible' daily driver, so the mini will retire to a weekend/track day mini.
