Having done a complete re-set on the twin H4 carbs on my '64 'S' yesterday, I took it out today for the first time since I did a lot of work on it over the Winter.

It was great to drive it again. The  0 - 120 mph speedo, rebuilt by Speedy Cables, works and is exactly correct. The new suspension cones feel much more compliant than the old ones.

It doesn't 'arf go!

With Spring arriving I gave the Mini a bit of attention before I drive it.

I drained the oil and made some attempt to keep it in the engine this time. My sump plug has barely any threads to grip onto after the last owner overtighened it and stripped them all. I dare not torque it to spec, so I have replaced the copper washer for one with a rubber bit and applied some Threebond gasket goo around the mating face on the sump, and between the washer and the bolt. This is partly to try and seal it, but also to prevent the bolt unwinding. It had lost a pint over the last year so I need to do something. I also managed to change the filter without removing the grille. Tomorrow I will pour in some Castrol and see if it worked.

I've also been having trouble with the stalks. The indicator only cancels in one direction and the fast wiper speed is slower than the normal one. I bought a pair of new Minispares ones and set about replacing the old ones. I'm glad I did. Check out this bodgery. That is a bit of hacksaw blade and some wood screws holding it together:

Well today I filled it with oil and drove it. The good news is the oil stayed where it should be, and the indicators both indicated and cancelled.

The bad news is it then died on the way home about 2.5km from my house.

I have no idea what the problem is, as it was running fine on the way out, and has plenty of fuel.

I managed to restart it after a short while and it drove 2km before doing it again. I just nursed it to the top of the last hill and then coasted home in neutral. Old cars eh?

I put the light bar back on, PO took it off as it had 4 yellow foglights which are legal in Alberta but not in BC. I removed the 2 middle foglights and put in 2 clear spotlights, wired to come on with high beam, it is now legal in BC. I also installed a centre console after modifying it, the RHD to LHD conversion put the pedals and the heater box in the wrong positions. I also installed an ashtray clock/USB port module( the Wife has to be able to charge her phone).

Then I went for a drive to the next town which is just over an hour away and boy did I have fun.

Today I attempted to replace the temporary jubilee clips holding the exhaust on with the correct 8mm U-bolt camp.

FAIL....  While the 2 new exhaust hanger rubbers were perfect, the 50mm exhaust clamp just would NOT go on.

Why?  Because the upstream pipe you measured you clown was 50mm so the downstream socket that you want to clamp round it will be bigger than 50mm you total fecking numpty.  :xxx:

So a 52mm clamp will be arriving tomorrow and then (just maybe) I can complete the job.
But...... as this was all clamped up properly (allegedly) before and the clamp came loose and fell off I wonder if it would be wise to just move the jubilee clips out of the way and snug them up on another part of the piping for when this all happens again.

Came into the barn to find the Mini had been crying.
Turns out someone in the past broke and bodged the (1 or 2 years only) washer bottle with silicone and their bodge had failed. Cue a floor covered in washer fluid!

That bottle is unavailable in the UK but I found some in stock in France, so ordered a new one. If anyone with a 1991 model (brake servo, smaller washer bottle under bonnet) needs a replacement let me know and I can put you onto some suppliers.

100 mile shake down out towards Ripon and Fountains Abbey to see if anything else blows after recent fuse popping woes. Went well, great weather.

on the Green ex-rally mini:
Found and fixed an annoying rattle, took a while to find, was coming from NS front bumper bracket which had broken
made a new one from thicker metal I had in garage
Fixed electrical issue with aux electric fan, works again
on the van:
fitted wheel that came back from being refurbed, only to find out they put the wheel weights in wrong place - hitting the brake caliper
local garage sorted that out for me
will be taking Green mini out for spin round Peak District tomorrow

The Amazon Fairy delivered and the exhaust has been clamped within an inch of its miserable life.

I left the pro-tem jubilee clips on the piping further up just-in-case though.  :-)

Is the thermostat housing stack still "weeping"?  Will take her for a run and find out.

If it is, that's a pig because it means remaking 2 gasket joints.  :(

Popped down to the Duddleswell Cafe, in the Ashdown Forest, for a coffee and a scone with my Daughter.

Was this because the double valve springs had been fitted, or needed fitting? Standard head otherwise?
