I'd start at the carb, check the fueling etc :) does it make any difference with the choke out?

Try finding a choke cable in an Mpi, its really hard to find. :teehee:

Just put the car down in the garage, and it seems better when cold. Also, when I got to loughborough, which is about 45 motorway miles from here I think, so a good 65mph run, when in neutral if I lifted the clutch pedal up it made a noise, if I pushed it down again the noise stops.

That's significant isn't it?

It's not cute it's a compete *naughty word*. Haha, it can stay in the garage a few days now I think. You know I said earlier I'd give it a nice clean if it behaved today, I was feeling optimistic, I forgot to say what I'd do if it didn't behave :P

What sort of noise is it? Could be the thrust bearing? :)

Kind of rattling, like something was loose, and pushed the clutch down was tightening it again and making the noise stop. Not a great description I know, but I was running a bit late so had to leave playing with it.

Thrust washers, would that equate to fore and aft movement of the crank, that is alleviated when the clutch is down? Sounds time consuming and 'spensive to fix!

Well the consensus thus far is that the idler gear has too much float. So looks like I'm back to wanting a new gearbox again!
