Hi Graham. Your right about the starter not disengageing. With inertia starters, when the starter starts to turn, the pinion gear wants to remain stationary which causes it to wind in and engage due to the bendix thread (helical thread). The pinion will remain engaged until the engine fires, which causes a sudden acceleration of the flywheel, throwing the pinion back along the bendix thread and so disengageing it.

Nice one Scott,

Have tried it out of the engine set up too and it spins freely but couldn't see the teeth moving much. Apart from the newly shiny contact points the teeth are grungy and the helicoil a little too, cant understand how I missed this dirt, very unlike me lol. Will clean up and hope it all goes well during propper firing.

Well Graham, all these nice experiments without the other half knowing it,....... another weekend in Brussels might help.....otherhalfs are strange creatures indeed......look forward to the firing up result, good luck, re-birth of an engine is just increadable feeling.
PS not thought about an electric Dizzy.....

Great stuff, well if I have a spare minute on Saturday I may have to have a nosey, might not get chance though as Im having a new kitchen fitted at the mo so plasterers coming on Sat. If you need anything like timing light, feeler gauges for valve clearances or compression tester to see what your cylinders are up to give me a buzz, I can even get my hands on a CO analyser if you need to set the mixture correctly. My Mini passed its MOT last Saturday so Im a happy boy at the mo! She does need a service now though.

haha, my missus is the same, always scrutinising the Natwest account saying "whats this minispares order for" sometimes I regret a joint bank account!

+1 for the elec ignition minimuk, easy to fit and never lets you down, was chuffed when I fitted mine (on megajolt now though)

Hi Graham - I hope you didn't scratch the tiles dragging that engine to the front door. What risks you take! What if Jan changed her mind and came back home! What if Jan Googles to see what you are up to and finds this topic. It would be interesting for us other guys to be an observer! I'd love to film it and put on U-tube. I am still trying to work out - are you brave or are you foolish?

It is good to turn an engine over on the starter after a rebuild as it gets the oil into all the galleries and bearings before the engine comes under load. Run it on the starter for 30 seconds or so. Looking good Graham.

Hi all,

thanks Phil, even though you couldn't help, will be working through the chart on the link on Monday, have posted in the tech section for HEEEELLLLLLP !!! lol.

Not done much excepy buying off fleabay, a Smiths clock and oil pressure gauge to be precise. The clock was one I had been after for a while, 60's I think, but hard to get hold of.

I ttried to get it working but being clockwork and old it worked for 10 mins and then stopped, worked for a bit more then stopped. Not very good for accurate time keeping so I bought a mondeo dash clock and ended up with these left over.

Now to get it all together, size wise not too bad but the circuit board is too big which will mean slotting the board into the original case.

It's not far off but you get the idea and a rough mock up will see it look like this

Just got to do the metal work and silicone some bits in place. But it is accurate and should look pretty much identical when I have finished.

Finishing it is very much on the back burner till I get the engine to fire up, :shy:

Trying to keep motivated !!!

Graham
