Muk,

I hope MOT by October even if not all trimmed up !!

Ben O,

thanks for the comment.  I don't know if Rustoleum is ok to spray over in the furure,  possibly not,  but I wont be going there,  just more coats if needed.  There is something called Bar coat which can be applied to most things to create a barrier to anything reacting with fresh paint so that could be done if required.

Sonik,

Plenty of paint is my aim at the moment but it is all weather dependant,  two coats on in a good day,  1 a week in cooler temps,  none in rain lol.  Good point about the car shampoo tho,  have just been using washing up liquid so far,  will get some before next flatting.  The problem as can be seen in one of my last posted pics is rubbing through where I thought I had a thicker coating on,  may have to not rub down there as hard next time and let the thickness build up.

Generally tho the peel is getting less each coat and the shine better,  but as I said,  it will probably only be a 10ft paint job,  but for £100 I will live with it !!

Thanks for all the comments,  will get a couple of coats on before posting again so not to bore you all lol !!

Graham

It's looking great Graham,

A lovely colour too

What grade of wet and dry are you flatting back with?

600 on shell,  but down to 1200 on boot that has 5 coats now.  The peel is getting easier to get rid of with each coat,  flatting down in between each one I think is the key with rustoleum.

I think 600 may be a bit course! Only my opinion though!

Are you at work next Wednesday?

Washing up liquid has salt in it so not suitable for flatting back paint. 600 is way too coarse you really need to be in the 1000 + range for the best results. As you say the more coats you do and flatting in between will get rid of all of the high spots.

Once you have done the last coat then flat back with 2000. Try some G3 to cut back (probably the best thing with this type of paint) then Scholl Concepts S17+ to cut back some more (its not as coarse as G3) then something like 3M polish Rosa to buff up.

Great work! Its always really encouraging to see people doing the roller technique. I'll be watching this closely now to see the finished result. Keep pushing! Its going to be awesome!

600 is a bit too coarse, 1000 is a bit too fine... I would go 800's. As Sonikk4 said G3 is good but Farecla also do a G5 which is finer. I will be brush painting some 2k underneath my Min soon so keep am eye on my thread

Sonik and Petrol,  600 is indeed far too coarse so have moved to 1200 for now,  seems to be fine.

Rich,  the rollering is a cheap way of doing paint but lots of work,  seems to be coming on nicely though.

Sooooooo,  not much of an update but here goes,

Had a nice visit from Carlos (My engagement present project thread),  as he was passing,  and I blew him away with how well I have hidden all the bodgery that I have done lol.  As soon as he went, (that sounds bad,  but you know what I mean),  I taped up the roof and slopped on a first coat.

Very patchy as the first blue coat was but being white it shows more.  It's on though and should stop the rust coming through.  Got to be very careful whe doing it as drips are the enemy.  Very close to dripping it on the blue paint.

While that was drying I rubbed the shell down with 1200 and the peel is getting less each time

IMG_03281280x853_zpsc0f04dcc.jpg

The boot lid I did the same with and after 5 coats it is nearly smooth

As a comparison boot to shell

IMG_03261280x853_zpsdb031735.jpg

I think another coat on boot,  6,  and will be enough.

The roof gutter will need a touch up but it will have a trim on it so not a problem

IMG_03351280x853_zps9060c487.jpg

Then as all was drying our feathery friends came by to say hello

IMG_03361280x853_zps296fd9e4.jpg

Just dry enough to get off but the back of the car was covered,  roof,  boot,  rear qtr,  nice !!

Left it like this but not convinced about the white,  maybe black would be better??

Regards,

Graham

Hoody,

Am having to do some bricklaying on the extension as my brickie is unable to get to me at the mo.   I am on 4 coats on shell,  1 on doors,  5 on bonnet and 6 on boot.  Boot is done except inside parts but wont be able to polish for a bit as the paint needs longer to cure than celly.  Have put two coats on the roof too but more will be going on as soon as we have next sunny spell.

No point of pics at the mo,  but it is starting to feel nice and thick,  if you know what I mean,  compared to the doors first coat.

Graham
