pouring the concrete:

i've added 5 bags of black pigments to 6 cubic meters of concrete. according to the samples i had, to end up with black concrete i would've needed 3 bags per cubic meter, which means 18 bags - but at 70$ per bag (about £42) i decided 5 bags would be enough. it should become dark enough when i polish it and apply the sealer.

i'm very pleased with the result, but i do expect it to crack around where the division boards are laid down (the boards are there so that we build the walls on them instead of nailing in the concrete - and poking holes in the radiant tubing!). if it does crack, its just a matter of filling the crack with a mix of sand, epoxy and dark pigment. i will wait a couple days and then i will wet-polish it with diamond pads with grit ranging from 150 to 3000, it will become as slick as granite.

Just a point, i don't see any electrical cables? so how are you going to get between floors for the ring mains and lighting circuits?? have you installed dry risers to allow access between the floors??? that last new bulid i did had this type of heating system its good but you have to make sure you have all the cables in ( power, satellite, telephone, data) before the floors go down other wise its a no goer getting any more in. also if you are planning wireless internet in your house you wont get any signal between the floors because of the concrete so my suggestion is to wire internet points all round to cover all bases

if you notice where all the ducts are we made a division where no concrete was poured so that the ducts, drains and electrical stuff can go trough to the basement. good tip on the wireless connection, i'll make a note to run some wires before closing the walls!!!

the rough electrical is done, rough plumbing is 80% done. most of the windows should be done by the end of next week, after that we'll be able to close down the walls!

its very exciting to have something this big come out of your head... it hurts a bit, but sometimes (like today) you get peeks of the finished product and it feels great >_<

Those big windows look great! May have missed it earlier in the thread but what's the intended exterior cladding?

yes, unfortunately it only goes down at the moment, i have to get it fixed.

JR - it will mostly be charcoal colored acrylic with orange cedar in specific places like the basement wall, underneath the balcony, and in the recessed area in front. the garage door will also be covered in cedar. hope it doesnt make it too heavy for the door opener motor...

off to ikea for bathroom stuff. i hate shopping at ikea, but i make up for it by stealing lots of little wooden crayons...
