Bugger...

I know mate, I'm so annoyed, I thought I had it fitting fairly well.

It's the original skin on this side and I thought it was the well fitting side.

Also, the latch doesn't appear to go in far enough to get the door closing properly

Relax and return to it when you can mate. These things happen and it's all part of a resto no matter how annoying they are! It'll all be worth it when she's back together in her stunning new paint job and purring her way to shows!

Thanks Craig, I need to calm myself down, I've probably got until April to sort it as it wont be warm enough to paint it until then.

The boot is held on with ratchet straps as I want to paint it on the car and the hinges would get in the way

Plenty of time mate. Do you think you'll get a lot of hours in over Christmas?

I'm off for a week starting 2nd January so I may get some done then. I'm hoping to see Ben on Thursday for a bit of advice and hopefully I'll feel better after that

These things happen mate.

My new drivers door fits well around the main body of the door but the window frame is miles out. It is as if it needs to go forwards.

I will have to cut in pieces of window frame to change the shape of it slightly but this is pretty normal practice when fitting a door that is not original to the car.

Is your's fitting badly at the front?

also which door is it? Because we added filler to the door skin and a panels/quarter panels with the door fitted and closed to make the surface of each panel level with each other.

I seem to remember them fitting well.

I could come and have a nose next week if you like.

Ben

This sounds very familiar. The door itself is ok, but the window frame needs to go forward, it catches at the back, but you can walk through the gap at the front

Today I cut the window frame in order to move it to where it needs to be.

It all bent into a far better position, so I clamped it all up dug the welder out, turned the gas on, and the wire fed, but it wouldn't strike an arc, not even a suggestion of anything, it was like I hadn't connected the earth (but I had)

So I stripped the welder down to find this

The earth kind of wasn't connected. So I used a jump lead as an earth strap and it welded really well, I think this has probably been an issue for a while.

Door frame rejoined

And ground back with a flap disc

I need to modify one of the shims to get the door to fit properly, but once I've done that I'll take some pictures of the finished result.

I am going to need to repaint the window frame, but such is life

It could do with a piece added to the vertical bit at the back to make it all perfect, but then I don't know if the window would still fit

I had that conversation with Neil and he said a few mm here and there will make no difference to the fit of the glass.

I will be adding a piece in across the top when i cut mine as it needs to be wider and not just move over.

Will you be using new window rubbers?

If so then that's even better

Yes mate, I binned all the rubbers.

If I was to add a section to the vertical I'd want a piece of frame from a doner door, I haven't got the right thickness material to fabricate it

I was planning on putting the word out to see if anyone had a scrap door that they could cut the top frame off and sell me.

Perhaps we could get one together and share the bits of frame?
