The head will be just fine bolted straight on mate
but you could always play with it a bit, Wont do any harm
Head + freeflow = immensly more fun on your 850, I think you'll be very pleasantly suprised Tom

Well the smoke will either be the valve stem oil seals in the head (but you're replacing the head anyway aren't you?) or the piston rings worn.
the running problem is exactly what my old 1098 did when the piston rings had gone, however It's also pretty in keeping with dodgy electrics, have you checked the dizzy cap contacts? (are you still running leccy ignition?)

Could just be that with heat the seals swell up and do a better job. Tom are 100% sure it's the head? It sounds as if it is but i just want to make sure we can dismiss the piston rings.
