My ladders almost went missing a couple of months back whilst I was installing an external cctv camera outside a shop, I saw the scrap van (ropey old transit tipper) with 2 young lads standing on the top of the pick up frame with it up in the air, they were driving up and down the back lanes peering into peoples back yards for scrap, I came down off the ladders and into the shop to get part of the camera housing, and when I came back outside and walked back to the ladders, I saw one of them let go of the ladders as if he was about to pick them up, he seen me and hurried back to the van then drove off.

I was only in the shop for about 30 seconds too! I did see them an hour later with what looked like a vauxhall engine in the back, no doubt someone bought it as a replacement to fit and they've just helped themselves to it.

Traditional Rag and Bone men were not thieves, far from it they used to go around places collecting all unwanted items no matter what but always asked or were requested to collect. Its only in this thread that they have been associated with certain types of people who are more unscrupulous.

Its not very often you hear of the term Rag and Bone being used anymore. We all know what term we should be using but due to previous threads involving these characters and what we call them its not worth getting into a slagging match.

I have to say that this sort of comment never ceases to amaze me! Don't get me wrong it's clearly not this guys fault, it's just another example of how our culture and heritage is rapidly eroding away in this country. I can only blame the education system in modern Britain for ensuring that young people understand the different cultures of those around us, but for not ensuring that our own is anything more than a mere afterthought. :w00t:

My thoughts exactly. The stuff my daughter comes home with from school about other cultures history, their religion, their political stances etc. Never have i seen anything about out own heritage.Shameful.

You are no longer allowed to use the word Pikey!
You must now use the phrase: Caravan Utilising Nomadic Travellers or you use an acronym of the title for short.

i still see the scrap man driving round in his transit pick up, but these days hes driving a '60 plate transit pick up! and mainly collecting car batteries and the more precious metals, like catalytic convertors for there innards (i think theres platinum inside them or something) but round my old house, you used to get them coming round once a week shouting "scraapp iirrroonnn!" and blowing a hunting horn lol but i used to get on well with them, as they would offer me mini bits that had been collected, in return for any scrap i had :w00t: not a bad deal really!

The guys that came round our way every now and again blast the steptoe theme out of a big megaphone that's strapped to the roof. I was creased laughing at it one day.

they wouldnt swear about that round here, i saw a scabby looking truck or some sort with a Ka slotted in, in no particular way nose down, arse in the air, obviously couldnt give a damn even if it fell off the back into path of some other car because it wasnt strapped down, and obviously exceeding the vehicles weight lifting for the load bed...wish i was a cop right then, but of course they wouldnt abide by anything you threw at them, scum*ucks
