Latest......

MG head
MG cam
998 Mini City E Distributor (8 deg) modified
HS inch and a half carb
Howley Inlet
1.3 Metro air filter
Electric fan
1.3 Metro cast exhaust manifold
Modified 1.3 Metro exhaust with single back box
Lightened Flywheel
Metro gearbox
3.76 Diff

Sort of budget,  insurance friendly,  fast road :whistling:

What bhp?

Cant afford rolling road sessions, I do it with a stopwatch between marked lamp posts on a straight bit of road near me.

Its quicker than it was and will keep up with a 1275  to 70mph, low diff helps and I recon its about 50.

Nice thing is that it revs a lot and sounds lovely, cant get better than that on a budget

my dad has a cracking 998 in his '73 which my brother put together for him,

its much like some of the others really,

pocketed block,

12g940 head that was ported and had the chambers tidied up

kent 266

hif38 with a k&n

cooper freeflow, twin box rc40

and that is about it, made 80bhp and 70lb/ft torque on hi-tech rolling road a couple of years ago, the same day i took a customers 1275 which made 63bhp!

it drives great and really does rev very easily, i would like something similar in my metro when i get round to it.

If you want to save money then no need really for the lightened followers or the duplex timing chain, I would have thought that  one will cancel the other out weight wise, all your power will come from the head and manifolds, you might consider an MG distributor to match the cam, with head cam, dizzy, and extra breathing you should see 50 bhp quite easily

998 +20 pocketed (1014cc)
County flat top pistons
Early mg metro cam
Standard 12G940 head - thought better of the big valve one..
Duplex
Currently on hs4, but might put an hif 38 on. Any other suggestions?
RC40 single box

Will get it rolling roaded in 200 miles or so.

Sounds like you have it all covered, only other thing would be a lightend flywheel or a different carb

my old 998 had a maniflow system on it with a very good head on it. 3.44 fd hif 38 and it was fast for a 1 litre.

i had a mate follow me in his bmw to see what speed it was really doing as it would go right round to the M on MPH on the slandered 90 mph clock. I had the correct speedo drive fitted aswell!

It would do 100mph exactly!  Which I didn't think was too bad :)
